For fans of Warriors and Wings of Fire comes a magical adventure story about a street cat who's mistaken for a wizard's familiar.

Whether furry, flippered or feathered you'll be taking a closer look at your family pet. --Michael Buckley, author of The Sisters Grimm and NERDS

When Aldwyn, a young alley cat on the run, ducks into a mysterious pet shop, he doesn't expect his life to change. But that's exactly what happens when Jack, a young wizard in training, picks Aldwyn to be his magical familiar.

Finally off the tough streets, Aldwyn thinks he's got it made. He just has to convince the other familiars--the know-it-all blue jay Skylar and the friendly tree frog Gilbert--that he's the telekinetic cat he claims to be. But when Jack and two other wizards in training are captured by the evil queen, Aldwyn will have to use all of his street smarts, a few good friends, and a nose for adventure to save the day

This delightful Indie Next pick is beloved by hundreds of thousands of readers and was named to nine state award lists. Don't miss any of the exciting books in the Familiars series: Secrets of the Crown, Circle of Heroes, and Palace of Dreams.

One of the greatest fantasy novels of all time!!
A lot of people have said that the familiars are violent and too grim for the young audience it is meant for. But I read it in first grade and I believe that it was this book that ignited my interest in fantasy and my love for dragons. And I don 't think I would be who I am today if I hadn 't read this book. If you like animals, relatable characters, a good adventure story and COURSE MAGIC AND FANTASY AND ALL THAT GOOD WIZARD STUFF is perfect for you! !!

3rd Grade Daughter Devoured this book and others in series!
She is in the 3rd grade and devours them so fast that I can hardly believe it. She already loves animals and these must be scary but not too exciting because she is a bit of a fraidy cat when it comes to books and movies. Each book is mainly about one of the magical animals, at least the first 3. I ordered #4 for her in hardcover so that she could keep reading.

   Magical animals.
Despite the predictability and common fantasy elements, I enjoyed this book quite. One thing is that the main character is a cat, which gives a different perspective. The end was not real hard to figure out, but being there was enjoyable and exciting enough that I had a hard time putting the book down. I liked the fact that the focus is on the animals rather than humans. I read the sequels definitely.

   Kept my picky reader rapt
My daughter loves to read, but is REALLY picky about what she reads, so that can cause problems when selecting books. She read this book in a day and begged for the other 2. She likes wizarding topics, so I picked this out for her hoping she would enjoy it. She loved that it was centered around the animals and spoke up a storm about each of the animals'personalities. I would recommend this to any child who loves either wizarding or animals. And if they are not yet ready for Harry Potter, this is a good book to get their interest in fantasy books peak.

You Don't Have To Be A Kid To Enjoy THIS!
If you are a person who does not like cats, frogs or birds, read something else, but if you want to relax with a good fairy tale, you will really enjoy this book, whether you are under 12 or not afraid to admit that you are a 50-year-old kid. This is an appropriate book to listen to with your children, grandchildren or cats. Dogs may not appreciate it though because it may remind them of how many times they were displaced by the family cat. It is also appropriate for its lessons in bonding and getting along with others who may not be the types of individuals we would normally choose as friends. I look forward to a sequel.

   Not or sensitive readers
As a teacher of the 3rd and 4th graders, I read this book to see if it would be a good read aloud choice. I admit, I enjoyed the book. I don 't think that it is trying to be a standard plot, it is predictable and has typical characters. I would not have a problem suggesting this to a child who enjoys fantasy stories, but I do have a major problem with the book. A lot of character die and there are a lot of dark scenes. I would be warys of this if you buy this book for a sensitive child that reacts badly in pain or dying to others.

This book shows that the bonds of friendship can turn anyone into a great hero. It is an action-packed adventure book, and I can not wait to read the next wonderful book in this series!
