Book Overview
A 2018 Pura Belpr Author Honor Book
The First Rule of Punk is a wry and heartfelt exploration of friendship, finding your place, and learning to rock out like no one's watching. There are no shortcuts to surviving your first day at a new school--you can't fix it with duct tape like you would your Chuck Taylors. On Day One, twelve-year-old Mal (Mar a Luisa, if you want to annoy her) inadvertently upsets Posada Middle School's queen bee, violates the school's dress code with her punk rock look, and disappoints her college-professor mom in the process. Her dad, who now lives a thousand miles away, says things will get better as long as she remembers the first rule of punk: be yourself. The real Mal loves rock music, skateboarding, zines, and Soyrizo (hold the cilantro, please). And when she assembles a group of like-minded misfits at school and starts a band, Mal finally begins to feel at home. She'll do anything to preserve this, which includes standing up to an anti-punk school administration to fight for her right to express herself Black and white illustrations and collage art throughout make The First Rule of Punk a perfect pick for fans of books like Roller Girl and online magazines like Rookie. Armed with a microphone and a pair of scissors, this book is all about creating something new and awesome in the world. Mal rocks --Victoria Jamieson, author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling and Newbery Honor-winning Roller Girl- This item: The First Rule Of Punk$3.49

My ten year old starts a new school in this fall. According to her, the main character and her father remind her of our family.

Entertaining
Derived From Web , Jun 7, 2021
I loved learning more about the Mexican-American culture. I didn 't know anything about the Mexican punk scene, so it was fun to learn more about music to explore. Read this for a college class on children's literature and enjoyed it.

First Favorite Book for a Friend
Derived From Web , Sep 12, 2020
I bought this as a birthday present for my neighbor's child, who turned 8. It might have been more difficult than I intended it to be, but it turned out to be a good read for them to stretch a little and grow their vocabulary. They told my partner that they have now read it several times and it makes all their picture books seem childish. This is a serious and mature child so that it seemed to really speak to them and their life situations, though not exactly the same. I did not read the book myself, but I really liked the theme of being yourself and hope that was encouraging for them.

Finally I got around to reading this book. I am a puddle of emotions. It's perfect and I am not surprised at all the awards it has received. The character is real and endearing Mal. The story, writing, the premise, everything is perfect and I am so happy to live in a world where this book exists. Celia, congratulations on writing this beautiful book. Spunky Heroine For All
Derived From Web , Dec 1, 2017
This book is why I love reading the middle grade! Celia C. Pérez's FIRST RULE OF PUNK by Celia C. Pérez has everything I look for in a story. Mal is a heroine with guts and heart and a strong sense of self, all of which holds her in good stead as she navigates the ups and downs of being a new girl in school and in her neighborhood. She is also an artist who creates zines to express her feelings and interests. I enjoyed the mix of Latino culture, punk music, strong family ties and the drama that is the world of the middle school. How good is this book then? Well, folks who know me know that I gravitate towards urban fantasy and magical realism and male protagonists. But THE FIRST RULE OF PUNK had me on the opening scene and wouldn 't let me go until I finished it. This is an author I 'll be following from now onwards.

Run, don 't read this book. Give it to the children of your life, their friends, the library, a school. This is not *my* story, but every weirdo out there will connect with this tween and her desire to be herself and connect with all her heritage and passions in life.

The first rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez is a 12-year-old Mal, a Mexican-American girl who moves with her mother to a new state. As Mal adjusts to her new school, she works on her zine and starts a punk band with other mishaps. I loved this book and I guarantee that you will too!

What a great story about how to navigate through changes just as ...
Derived From Web , Sep 5, 2017
Oh how I adored this story from Malu, a biracial girl who comes from Chicago to her parents as she finds her school, new neighborhood, and her family settling down in her new neighborhood. Her parents are earing and relateable, as are the community members. What a good story about how to survive through changes, just as life seems to be in a mess for all the middle schoolers. Holu is an accessible character for children, with flaws and also a kind, justice - filled heart. The Zines are also incredible! What a wonderful outlet for kids!
