Book Overview

The domestic cut flower business has experienced a renaissance in the past decade, thanks in large part to the first edition of The Flower Farmer: An Organic Grower's Guide to Raising and Selling Cut Flowers, which helped thousands of small growers start successful businesses. This newly expanded and thoroughly revised edition will be equally as influential for novices and experienced growers alike.

With the cut flower business growing at record rates, demand is at all time highs, challenging growers to take advantage of new techniques to prolong the harvest. New sections on utilizing greenhouses, recommendations for flower cultivars, and post harvest handling growers throughout all of North America will help improve their bottom line. Also updated is the acclaimed resource directory, complete with sources of seeds, plants and supplies, and expert information on organic production under the National Organic Program.

For the beginner and backyard gardener, there is an extensive section on the basics--variety selection, soil preparation, planting, cultivation, harvest, and floral design. For the commercial grower, The Flower Farmer includes information about larger-scale production, plus advice about selling to florists, wholesalers, supermarkets, brides, at farmers markets, and more.    Not much left to say that hasn't already been said
Within the first 36 hours, I read this book twice. The author says the book is intended to be a thorough introduction to the production and marketing of cut flowers. I will return to this as a reference guide over and over, so I would give it 6 stars if I could. This book can be a great addition to your library if you never plan on selling cut flowers. The appendix is worth more than the book.

   Highly recommend
This book is very good for any flower gardener. It is a good resource for growing many varieties of plants, and you don't have to be a farmer to read it. Information about different equipment. I am only halfway through the book and have picked up many good tips. A friend of mine is going to learn to grow her own flower garden as well, so I recommended it to her.

This one the best so far:
I bought a lot of books on flower marketing. This is the best. The author takes the price of your supplies, water, seeds, and plants into account. Fees for employee and maintenance. How this affects the cost of your flowers. There is a lot of green house info.

   Helpful for Beginners
It is helpful, but needs to be more specific for a textbook price. There is a pricing table for individual floral stems and some information on putting together wedding and funeral floral arrangements. I wanted to start a florist business, but I didn't have a clearcut individual stem pricing table. I wouldn't recommend anything except entry level business ventures. I' ve been growing plants since I was a kid, so this doesn't do much for me.

   Must buy!!
I'm not familiar with this flower farming stuff. I' ve taken a lot of interest in it, but I don't know where to start. I bought this book for the first time and it taught me so much. I don't know a thing. The book was about real life farmers stories. ?

Read this book if you are an aspiring flower farmer
This is a great book to read for aspiring flower farmers. There is excellent advice for both growing and marketing flowers. The key is marketing. Lynn points out that it is difficult to break into the cut flower business. An excellent read!

This is a good book to read. This is a must read if you want to become a flower farmer. I would have liked to have read it before I started this year. Even though I took a wonderful online class, there is so much information in this book that has been very helpful.

Mixed bouquets are added to my farmers market offerings. Everything I needed to know about flowers was in this book. A discussion about how each variety should be handled is included in the appendix.
