Book Overview

An accessible story of America's birthday brings alive the history and spirit of the Fourth of July, with an introduction to the fight for independence and the events and people that shaped American tradition.

What happened on the Fourth of July long before there were fireworks and parades? Alice Dalgliesh takes young readers back to revolutionary times, back to the colonists' desire for freedom and the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

Simple text captures the excitement of the era, telling how word of Independence traveled up and down the thirteen colonies, touching the lives of everyday people throughout the land. Like all of Alice Dalgliesh's work, The Fourth of July Story remains an American classic.

I highly recommend this if you are looking for it. We used it for our fun study of the 4th July for homeschooling our 3rd grader. He enjoyed it and we learned some!

   accurate history greated tword children
Beautifully written with very well illustrated illustrations. I received this to read to my 9 and 11 year old girls, they enjoyed the nugget of VERY important history to prepare them for our upcoming Independence Day celebration and trip to Philadelphia. This was not just a story, like some review said, this is accurate history told in a way that children can understand and absorb.

   Lovely intro to US Independence
I have a 10 year old homeschooled. Though we did US history in Grades 1-3, it was mostly stories and biographies, so we are just beginning to dig deeper. Beautifully classical illustrations. Great buy for children of elementary age.

Stunning story written and illustrated beautifully. 4 July : American introduction to great history and American history. The history of America has not been changed or slanted in the direction of political ideals or particular interests. It is just the story of how it happened! A light book for any age! '' See You!
