The Gift Of Being Yourself: The Sacred Call To Self-Discovery
Book Overview
This Description may be from another edition of this product.
Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know thee. --Augustine Much is said in Christian circles about knowing God. But Christians throughout the ages have agreed that there cannot be deep knowledge of God without deep knowledge of the self. Discerning your true self is inextricably related to discerning God's purposes for you. Paradoxically, the more you become like Christ, the more you become authentically yourself. In this profound exploration of Christian identity, psychologist and spiritual director David G. Benner illuminates the spirituality of self-discovery. He exposes the false selves that you may hide behind and calls you to discover the true self that emerges from your uniqueness in Christ. Freeing you from illusions about yourself, Benner shows that self-understanding leads to the fulfillment of your God-given destiny and vocation. Rest assured, you need not try to be someone you are not. But you will deepen your experience of God through discovering the gift of being yourself. This expanded edition, one of three titles in The Spiritual Journey trilogy, includes a new epilogue and an experiential guide with questions for individual reflection or group discussion.

Seeing Yourself as God Sees You.

He also wrote, "Many thanks be to Our Heavenly Father, for the many times He has shown His love for us." Far more than you can possibly imagine. Other books I have read on the same subject were good but repetitive. You will find yourself taking your time going over each chapter of the book, taking in all the spiritual truths.

Dr. Benner's wisdom and experiences are so inspiring and wonderful, said Dr. Abraham. I learned so much about Jesus and I began to fall more in love with him. I also learned a lot about myself, and I am considering reading it again because it is so jam-packed with wisdom that I feel I need a long time to process and digest each chapter! Dr. Benner, who has done extensive work with the Red Cross, is also very generous.

The author clearly helps the reader understand the source of who we are as centered in God and apart from him we are all false. I'll continue to refer back to it as I discover myself and God.

Excellent Read!

It was a book of freedom and affirmation of self, Raymond said. The fact is, the parts that you thought were wired or different, but in truth, exactly how God made you to be for the calling he has on your life. This is also a book I will review every year or two to make sure I am on track. This book is for anyone that desires to be rooted in God's handiwork with them.

He said the book was "a dear book about knowing God." While it could be easily summed up in a few sentences, process learning was the key.

Great grounding in identity
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I still don't like to generalize the word Christian, even though it has come to mean something cultural or religious. Even though the book is written for today's youth, it is solid on the subject of identity—not just who we are but what God is making of us.

wOw I mean wOw
Derived From Web , Nov 14, 2020
I have read this book four or five times. The book teaches how to know God and how you can't know God if you don't know yourself. You won't come to God with your real issues unless you are willing to talk about them. At the end of each chapter, there is a mention of how you might meditate on God's word.
