Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

The dramatic and enthralling story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge at the time, a tale of greed, corruption, and obstruction but also of optimism, heroism, and determination, told by master historian David McCullough.

This monumental book is the enthralling story of one of the greatest events in our nation's history, during the Age of Optimism--a period when Americans were convinced in their hearts that all things were possible.

In the years around 1870, when the project was first undertaken, the concept of building an unprecedented bridge to span the East River between the great cities of Manhattan and Brooklyn required a vision and determination comparable to that which went into the building of the great cathedrals. Throughout the fourteen years of its construction, the odds against the successful completion of the bridge seemed staggering. Bodies were crushed and broken, lives lost, political empires fell, and surges of public emotion constantly threatened the project. But this is not merely the saga of an engineering miracle; it is a sweeping narrative of the social climate of the time and of the heroes and rascals who had a hand in either constructing or exploiting the surpassing enterprise.

A fabulous story of how a great monument in NYC came into being and the family passions that inspired it all.
Such an education not only about the families involved in the building of this monument, but about the understanding we acquired about the technology of that time, the risks that were taken and the role of Mr. Roebling in the actual construction of the Brooklyn Bridge was a wonderful story. We bought the audio - CDs and listen to the 9 Discs from NY to FL and finished the last CD as we pulled into our driveway. This story was so fascinating that I hardly remember the drive. I promise that you will not be disappointed.

This book has a great history, but is too detailed and makes for boring reading. From a scientific view of New York and Brooklyn, very interesting, but could have omitted some of the political portions.

   Great Read
I loved this book ''. Great story, great characterizations, good level of technical depth without being bogged in details. I had never seen it and had no plans to visit NYC, but when the family decided to take a vacation there, I had to see the bridge and it was a real pleasure to walk just a month or two after reading the book.

   Built from a strong foundation
I enjoyed the book thoroughly, but felt that its story telling faded towards the end of the book. The richness of the story, supported by McCullough's research, was riveting and amazing. Towards the end, the book seemed to lose a little of its impact and the story lost a little more superficial. Overall, I found this an interesting read and recommend it strongly.

   He's the best!
What is not to like David McCullough, who makes so much of history accessible as it comes to life in his books!

   Great Book!
I loved this book ''. These were real people working on real problems, with very limited technology, and shaping the country we have today - real stories like this make fantasy dull and meaningless. After finishing the book, we were able to visit Brooklyn and walk across the bridge from NYC to Manhattan. As McCullough described, it was beautiful to view and from which to view the city. And nearly 150 years after completion still fully functional.

   Wonderfully done
This is the most interesting book I read in a long time, and I read a lot. The engineering, politics, human interest, local color, period descriptions - all wonderfully done.

   good history book
The book arrived in great condition. Haven 't yet read it, busy with the Panama Canal book, but if other David McCollough are any sign, this book should be a good read.

The Bridge built to last 300 years.
I loved this book absolutely ''. I could look at what was interesting and underline words. People up there look at them with open eyes. Totally fantastic! I have one of my favorite books. I even checked the library and went to the hard copy to see the pictures. You won 't regret reading this book. I put the book down a few times to read other books. I have also checked books by Roblings, Boss Tweed, and then some, including the presidents, when the bridge was built. Then other political figures or other figures came ''. I know that my Great Grandfather John probably worked at one time or another on the bridge. I walked over this bridge.
