Highly literary, occasionally surreal, and grounded by Alice's clipped, matter-of-fact voice, it's a dark story that readers will have trouble leaving behind. HIGH-DEMAND: the buzz for this debut is deafening. Booklist, Starred Review

From rising star Melissa Albert comes a fantastical story of mythic proportions.

Welcome to The Hazel Wood--a fiercely stunning contemporary fantasy audiobook.

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice's life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice's grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away--by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: Stay away from the Hazel Wood.

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother's cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Read More chevron_right

   Well, this was a surprise!
Normally a book like this would get 4-stars from me, but the thing is, I can't get it out of my head. I read it in no time, & now I can't stop thinking about it. I mean, I have been telling absolutely everyone how thoroughly I enjoyed this. I looked for a nice .jpg or .gif to include here, but found them all to be totally inadequate. All I can do is say it's so freaking pretty, the word-building is freaking great, & the characters changed in ways I didn't anticipate when I started the story. As a matter of fact, I was initially slightly concerned that these 2 characters were going to let me down....obviously that didn't happen. They were appropriate for the age-level, & I didn't want to stop reading for anything.

Thank you for this fabulous story! I'll be looking forward to future work from this author, & anything at all having to do with the world this particular story is set in.

Dark twist on a fairy tale, yes!
My disclaimer is that this is not my genre! I almost put it down once, but I forged on and ripped through for the ending! It is a beautiful concept and a fascinating novel. I recommend to anyone who enjoys magical fantasy in the YA arena, also not my thing.

   Very creative
Definitely not your typical fairy tale. Reminds me of the book of Lost Things in the sense of a broken other world where things were not all the rainbows and knights we were led to imagine as a child. Some stories can have a dark or twisted take on them.

   Boring book
The whole thing came from the second chapter. It had me well disposed of, that is the only positive. I do not recommend '' this book.

   Torn
About this book, very torn. I did not like the story, but loved the writing absolutely. Empturing smells, feelings, etc. are utterly human and relatable. I don 't know if I ever read this book again, but it was interesting and unique and I look forward to seeing what else the author writes over time.

   Disjointed
Basically, two separate books were slapped together. The first is a weird YA novel about a girl on the run and the second half is... well, pretentious. Really dark and strange. I see why people hate it, but the thing is that I am an ADORE weird. Extra stars for going there and doing something different.

I feel like I wasted hours of my life
Listen carefully : I'm all about books that have a deeper meaning and give you an ending you didn 't expect. I was excited to finish this book to see how everything was wrapped up, but then I got to the ending and like WTF this isn 't an ending. I experienced in a satisfying way that nothing was truly wrapped up. I sometimes want to read a book that has a happy ending and makes me feel better. I ended up feeling like Alice's life sucks and then got the feeling of wow, including mine, all life sucks. The book was ok, but it would have been much better if all the loose strings were tied better.

   Absolutely brilliant.
Beyond Brilliant : The only negative is that the infrequent swear words feel like a jarring interruption of otherwise non-stop soul wrenching poetry with this high caliber of authorship. In writing, absolute perfection is achieved.

   Beautifully modernized and deepened fairytale
I loved this escapist fantasy novel about a girl on the run with her mother and herself on the run ''. All the deeper themes of what it means to be human and whether or not we can choose our lives are explored with as compelling a protagonist, as I have seen in a long time.

   Different in a good way...
It has been a while since I rated a book. The dark tower series by Stephen King is similar to the story in a story in a story. The ending I liked the best. Sometimes, the perfect ending isn 't happy. I don 't want to give away any details.
