Joseph Campbell, arguably the greatest mythologist of the twentieth century, was certainly one of our greatest storytellers. This masterfully crafted book interweaves conversations between Campbell and some of the people he inspired, including poet Robert Bly, anthropologist Angeles Arrien, filmmaker David Kennard, Doors drummer John Densmore, psychiatric pioneer Stanislov Grof, Nobel laureate Roger Guillemen, and others. Campbell reflects on subjects ranging from the origins and functions of myth, the role of the artist, and the need for ritual to the ordeals of love and romance. With poetry and humor, Campbell recounts his own quest and conveys the excitement of his lifelong exploration of our mythic traditions, what he called the one great story of mankind.

Joseph Campbell is a major fan of Campbell! This is one of the few books that I do not own. Reading it was like only Campbell can do, another door '' to another amazing world. He makes you question yourself within the context of this country, this planet, this place in space. We are fantastic beings and we need to know ourselves better and understand the world around us on a much deeper level. Ha ha! So many ah ha! Moments when reading about Campbell and realizing that we are all on our own hero journey.

This is a brilliant book, it's a collection of interviews that makes you feel like you are sitting in the discussion. The book also gives you a background into the life of this extraordinary man. Who is a great teacher of mine? I love the informal style of discussion and the way the content flows. It is not written in the dry academic sense.

Joseph Campbell takes us on a circular journey where we ...

Joseph Joseph Campbell takes us on a circular journey where we travel through the trials of becoming a hero and ending where we began, but enlightened and transcended from that place where we were once. It does not stop there. We don 't rest on our laurels basking in being a hero. We share our newfound knowledge and take it with our families, friends and communities in which we live. I've often heard the phrase : we are the heroes of our own life. When a cloud began to dissipe, I became aware that I was in fact my own hero and that I had a meaning and contribution to our world.

Haha! It was required reading for a class, but it sucked me completely in. Joseph Campbell fell in love with I a little bit of love. And the intro to the archetypes and mythology of the humans completely grabbed me. I have ordered more books by Joseph Campbell to delve deeper.

This is the best book I've read on Joseph's Campbell's life and his ...

This is the best book I read on Joseph's Campbell's life and his philosophy of life. I would say it is even more powerful than Bill Moyers Book, The Power of Myth. I really love this book very much ''. It explains how his ideas have evolved over his lifetime. Here is just one example. From 1929 -- 1934, he spent five solid years reading one book after another and wherever they took him, he just kept reading. This is quite a powerful way to learn.
