Book Overview

Since its release in 1949, The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced millions of readers by combining the insights of modern psychology with Joseph Campbell's revolutionary understanding of comparative mythology. In these pages, Campbell outlines the Hero's Journey, a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world's mythic traditions. He also explores the Cosmogonic Cycle, the mythic pattern of world creation and destruction.

As part of the Joseph Campbell Foundation's Collected Works of Joseph Campbell, this third edition features expanded illustrations, a comprehensive bibliography, and more accessible sidebars.

As relevant today as when it was first published, The Hero with a Thousand Faces continues to find new audiences in fields ranging from religion and anthropology to literature and film studies. The book has also profoundly influenced creative artists--including authors, songwriters, game designers, and filmmakers--and continues to inspire all those interested in the inherent human need to tell stories.

   A Must Read!
I wish I'd known about this book a long time ago. I hold it to be a sacred text and consider it a profound work. Campbell provides the typical progression of the 'hero', as well as demonstrating the commonality of many myths and stories. This is a must read for anyone who is interested in expanded awareness. I expected a dull look at the world's myths and epic stories in this book. I found a map of the path of the embodied soul. A great book.
One Pretty Much Has to Read this Book
There is a book called The Bible for story structure. You are probably aware of that. Everyone in the world gives this book five stars, and raves about how it changed their lives. It is a great book, but it can be very dry reading, so I gave it four stars. I like the book, but I don't know if I will keep it on the shelf. If you want to be a professional storyteller, or just like to spin yarns, this is a good book to read, so that you can check it off your list.
Was between 3 and 4 stars because I found this ...
I found this difficult to follow at times. It is very detailed and pretentious in my opinion. There is a lot of information in here, but it could have been simpler.
   Myth and Its Importance
An interview with the great and late Joseph Campbell, who dedicated his life to explaining the importance of myth to humans, was included in a documentary I saw. The book was interesting, but also had some psycho babble at times. It made me want to take the online course.
I purchased Myths to Live By and The Hero With a Thousand Faces at the same time, both by Joseph Campbell. I found this book to be just as pedantic as the first one, so I wish I hadn't. The author is seen as arrogant and close-minded academic elitist by the reader because he subtly insulted their intelligence. This is a book for people who want to be told what to think. The book is a waste of money if you think for yourself.
Good concepts, a little hard to read
This is a collection of Joseph Campbell's works and the Heroes Journey. You need to be very focused while reading. It is difficult to read.
