Slow to start but quite rewarding!
Derived From Web , May 20, 2022
I had to read this for my college class in great books, and LOVED it! True, it starts really slow and the scads of the Greek names got so confusing that I had to write them down in my head, but once you get to the Battle of Thermopyle, the story moves like a pure drama. Great stuff!

Thucydides' Masterwork
Derived From Web , May 20, 2022
Through the use of numerous interviews, tirelessly researching records and gathering a great deal of evidence, Thucydides'; history of the Peloponnesian War stands as the first great work of non-fiction in Western history. After generations of epic poems and stories that included every bit as much exaggeration and mythology as they did truth, Thucydides used the tools of evidence and objectivity to create a reliable historical record of the great war between Athens and Sparta, which stood the test of time. This is vital reading if you have even a passing interest in ancient Greek history, military history, or any history at all.

Standard-setter for western historical study
Derived From Web , May 20, 2022
More than a simple historical treatise, it is a character study in human nature and its effects on the human actions that make history. A classic of historical works in its detail and insight into human action that we know as history. Thucydides is unsurpassed in his insights, clarity of language and thought and in his informative description of the history of his time. A must read for anyone wanting to delve into the depths of Western civilization and ethos. It could use more maps, but be sure to check the back of the book for the few it does have.

Interesting, but not worth reading in its entirety. Watch Prof. Kagan's lecture online through Yale Open Courses while using this book to look at portions of the lecture you want to read yourself. Prof. Kagan gives you a better understanding of events than most of us are going to read this book cold. Below is a link to his lecture videos, from Kagan's lectures.
