The House On Mango Street
Book Overview
This Description may be from another edition of this product.
In celebration of the tenth anniversary of its initial publication, and with a new introduction by the author, here is Sandra Cisnero's greatly admired and best-selling novel of a young girl growing up in the Latino section of Chicago. Acclaimed by critics, beloved by children and their parents and grandparents, taught everywhere from inner-city grade schools to universities across the country, and translated all over the world, The House on Mango Street has entered the canon of coming-of-age classics even as it depicts a new American landscape. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous, The House on Mango Street tells the story of Esperanza Cordero, whose neighborhood is one of harsh realities and harsh beauty. Esperanza doesn't want to belong - not to her run-down neighborhood, and not to the low expectations the world has for her. Esperanza's story is that of a young girl coming into her power, and inventing for herself what she will become. The San Francisco Chronicle has called The House on Mango Street marvelous. spare yet luminous. The subtle power of Cisnero's storytelling is evident. She communicates all the rapture and rage of growing up in a modern world. It is an extraordinary achievement that will live on for years to come.

Great book!

I like the book. It's perfect for readers who are struggling. I like the short story feel. I use Hairs as a model for students to write their own descriptions.

Best Book Ever

I must have read this book at least 15 times by now, and I find new and amazing things every time. The style of writing is unique, and the characters are lovable. I think diseases don't have eyes. They pick with a dizzy finger. This book is a quick read that will make you want to read it again and again.

Childhood Images

This was used in a class. It is a quick read and offers an alternate view from a child and a Latina perspective. The descriptions of simple moments in the chapters are great ways to think about how we label each other.

A new favorite

I heard great things about this book and it didn’t disappoint. I’m also Mexican American and it felt familiar which I haven’t felt from a book so far. I told my mom to read it straight after me because I loved it so much. This instantly became a new favorite of mine.

No story/ unrelated poems
Derived From Web , Jul 22, 2020
I was looking forward to reading this book but I am disappointed. There was no story line. More like writing. It was not very captivating. Maybe I didn't read it well. Would have liked it to be a tale. There are short pieces of poetry about things a young girl saw or experienced in a Latino community. The short pieces of poetry were too short to get you interested. I was fooled by the writing on the cover. Someone wanted this book to be published. There were no touching or heartbreaking poems in the short vignettes. Not a good book. So random and disconnected.

Inappropriate for children.

I was horrified after reading this book. A homeless man asked to kiss a girl. A man kissed a girl and wouldn't let her go. A thirteen year old girl is married to someone she doesn't know. I told my teachers that they should not have allowed 10 and 9 year olds to read it.

The House on Mango Street is everything!
Derived From Web , Sep 21, 2019
Hello there! I read this book in school when I was a kid, but it's even better now. When she was in San Francisco a decade ago, I saw her speak. I have read her books and poetry. I can't wait to buy her book. The House on Mango Street is amazing. This book is recommended to everyone. Being part Mexican, I can relate. Thank you for taking the time to read the review.

Worst narration ever. Good book though.
Derived From Web , Aug 18, 2019
Cisneros is a writer. She is not a narrator in many of her books. I'm not sure if she deliberately narrated this in a slow voice because she thinks that's what teens who read this book sound like, or if this is her actual voice, but the slow super baby toned voice was absolutely enervating. She sounded like she was condescending. Don't listen to your ears while you read this book. It was terrible to listen to the book.
