The Importance of Being Earnest A Trivial Comedy for Serious People Oscar Wilde The Importance of Being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People is a play by Oscar Wilde. First performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, it is a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae in order to escape burdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play's humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, while others foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Wilde's artistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make The Importance of Being Earnest Wilde's most enduringly popular play. The successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall. The Marquess of Queensberry, whose son Lord Alfred Douglas was Wilde's lover, planned to present the writer with a bouquet of rotten vegetables and disrupt the show. Wilde was tipped off and Queensberry was refused admission. Soon afterwards their feud came to a climax in court, where Read More chevron_right

I bought the book from Amazon's own Web site, www. amazon. com. Like a digitized version of a poor photocopy, the book is now available at reduced prices through Amazon's Web site. Some text runs off the page and gets truncated, and several pages were so faintly reproduced they were illegible. Only in the case of Tor will you find selected pages are downloaded, and other pages are arbitrarily replaced with advertisements for services such as Amazon's Kindle Fire. It was immediately returned to Amazon for credit, and I ordered a copy from a different publisher. Amazon has a great reputation for customer service, Sosa said.

Stick to the book for English Class....
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
As an English teacher, I bought this recording so that my students could hear Wilde's witty repartee at stage-speed. The guys also didn't like Algernon's voice, which sounded like a woman's and wasn't at all like the blond-haired rogue we pictured him to be. I would recommend this for Wilde lovers who are already familiar with the play and looking for an amusing car-stereo companion.

Not serious literature, but very entertaining.
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
One reviewer said the story was "fluff" and another called it "a terrible read." It's just that the Harrisons' claim is completely implausible. It was a thoroughly entertaining and witty book. It's a pretty quick read, even for a book. The English language is a little challenging, so you also get a little brain exercise.

Not what I expected

In the tradition of the masters of absurd, the French comedy troupe La Cage is to be seen again. This is a great collection of inane jokes, some of which are quite clever. I enjoyed the change of pace, Mr. Bolten said. Not everybody agrees with Mr. Powell's position on the issue of gun control.

Oscar Wilde was a genius
Derived From Web , Apr 20, 2022
I've visited his grave several times and it's just that I fell in love with his work again and again. This book is a perfect example of how people in society potray themselves as dignified individuals while keeping the realization that they play an important role in society, he said. They adjust themselves to fit their own standards and live up to their character and gender roles of their class and time.

Hilarious!!

It was so funny it had me out loud laughing on more than one occasion. Even if you have to do it all over again, it's so good you can finish it in no time. Yes, I finished it and I want to read it again. If you think about it, you'll probably never see a play like this again. I've seen it all, but this is one of the funniest and sharpest plays I've ever read.

A fine inexpensive edition of the classic.
Derived From Web , Dec 27, 2021
The second edition of "The Faerie Queen" was published in 1974-75, a 54-page, double-sided edition. The second act is 22 pages, and the third act is 11 pages. It is well printed and is relatively inexpensive, too.
