Book Overview

Don't miss this New York Times bestselling impossible to put down (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets--perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

   Good read
There are lots of twists and turns. This is the first time I've read this author's books. Going to book 2. I'm sucked in. A.

Best book I read in 2021!
This book was very enjoyable. Nancy Drew, National Treasure, and a tiny bit of Cinderella are all part of this. It was a fun and engaging book that had me quickly turning each page.

   A delightful read
Action packed whodunit, well scripted, well played. The story thread keeps you sharp as you read it.

   Amazing!
This book was amazing. The plot and characters were developed well, which resulted in a nail biting, action packed novel. The mystery was thought through and will keep you on the edge of your seat. I'm looking forward to reading it. We will done, Ms. Barnes!

   Quick and captivating read
It is an easy read with a plot that keeps you coming back for more. It would have been better without the awkward and randomly placed "I have a crush but I can't have a crush" moment. It was worth it if booktok lead you here.

   Good twisty plot
The twists in this book were good. It was a fun read and I was not able to second guess all the questions. Looking forward to book 2.

Quick Read with Lots of Twists
This book was very enjoyable. Someone suggested that I start and finish a book in a day. I loved the twists and turns. Can not wait for the next one.

Light read-irritating habit of repeating known facts over and over as filler.
The author should stop hammering home the same facts over and over again. It is just a waste of time, disrupting the flow of an enjoyable light read. I can't focus on the characters or plot since I'm so put off by you telling me the same thing I've already heard 3-4 times. That is lazy writing and sloppy editing. It is talking down to the reader as if they were not very bright. Do no authors read a lot anymore? Many books that would be good or great these days think it's necessary to keep their readers. They spell out every little detail in a way that makes us forget. The device makes the novel less memorable. I stop reading after paying full price.
