The commentary is historical with rife documentation, which makes the verses come to life in a way that was not possible before. It also puts the biblical verses into context like never before. This is particularly useful in today's society, where so much of the Bible is taken from context. I recommend this book highly to the scholar as well as the layman. Anyone and everyone would find this useful for their daily devotions.

Comments on Genesis reflect a liberal bias
Derived From Web , May 10, 2022
Opening comments on the origin of the Old Testament compares the writing to the ancient Near East religions. The reader is left thinking that the OT has emerged from the religious ideas of the Egyptian and Summarian epic texts and mythology. The fact that there are similar myths does not mean that these stories were borrowed from earlier stories. The uniqueness of OT is remarkable. If anyone wants a book that deals with this issue, I would recommend John H. Walton, Ancient Near East Thought and the Old Testament, Baker Books, 2009.

I really enjoyed the historical background commentaries. It adds much to your understanding when you know what was going on in the day of the actual audience for when it is written!

Fantastic resource that really needs a proof-reader for the typos
Derived From Web , Apr 2, 2018
Wonderful resource for allowing a clearer understanding of the ancient Near Eastern context in which the original hearers were immersed! But PLEASE, some one edit the typos and erroneous auto-fills. I lost count of them in my first 15 minutes of reading. It reads as though the computer has been the only proofreader. For example, the last one I caught replaced the word route '' with mute '' -- no human would have failed to see it. An occasional slip is easily ignored, but a constant flow of them is distracting. And I don 't want to be distracted from the wonderful information provided.

This commentary is sometimes helpful, sometimes not so much. One should remember that this is a background commentary ; it provides historical and cultural background for the Bible text. Often, the hypotheses of the interpretation become tedious to me, so I enjoy the simplicity of this commentary.

A volume from a library of reference works by Intervarsity Press, this offers a general overview of the background against the Old Testament, written and living. Not technical, but filled with excellent comments that explain how Bible passages are better understood with a bit of knowledge of the background panorama, against which events took place or daily customs were practiced and were the subject of Biblical writing.
