Book Overview

A scary but cheerful tale that draws on Caribbean folk traditions. A great update on the 'town under supernatural attack' story,
with a marvelous setting. --
The Baltimore Sun

Corinne La Mer claims she isn't afraid of anything. Not scorpions, not the boys who tease her, and certainly not jumbies. They're just tricksters made up by parents to frighten their children. Then one night Corinne chases an agouti all the way into the forbidden forest, and shining yellow eyes follow her to the edge of the trees. They couldn't belong to a jumbie. Or could they?

When Corinne spots a beautiful stranger at the market the very next day, she knows something extraordinary is about to happen. When this same beauty, called Severine, turns up at Corinne's house, danger is in the air. Severine plans to claim the entire island for the jumbies. Corinne must call on her courage and her friends and learn to use ancient magic she didn't know she possessed to stop Severine and to save her island home.

Entrancing and engaging . . . Baptiste enters an all-new folktale adaptation into our regular fantasy lore. Original. Haunting.--Fuse 8

Endlessly addictive and hypnotic. --Essence

It needed to be a little more polished. Especially the main characters and their relationship with the side character.
   A fantastic journey
Creepy and magical and fascinating. A story of family, of friends, of learning who you are and that you have the power to change the world. I enjoyed Corinne's journey, a discovery of her past and what she can do better for her island home in the future. The premise is different and intriguing. The characters are real and wonderful.
   A new lore for me
When I evaluated this book, i considered that it was out of sad for YA. The story is important and the Lore was a great discovery for me. However, most of the events in the book are based on characters and their motives, which is that the author didn 't give it much attention. Some of the conversations come out of nowhere, characters sing things without having a reason to do so. It was an ok read for me, and from out of a YA i would have given an A3 - star rating.
I loved this book greatly and finished it in under 2 hours. I couldn t put it down. It was both heart-warming and spooky. It was also great to have a look at traditional stories and fairy tales that are not Eurocentric. I now want to make a deep dive into Caribbean folklore to see what else it holds.
You’ll grow to love The Jumbies.
My granddaughter and I read together the Jumbies. We loved the book and are currently reading our third in the series by Baptiste. The story is filled with the emotions of fear, sorrow, delight, laughter.
   Excellent, non Euro-centric story
I read this before recommending it for our summer reading list, but I found that I can 't wait to read the next book in the series.
   From my 9 year old
It was very interesting and very exciting. It made us want to keep reading. My mom and I read it every night and I never wanted to stop. Almost all kids were brave in their own special ways. They were good friends and were good to each other! Miss Baptiste, thank you! Jaden was born in New York City, USA.
   Unique, spine-tingling fantasy!
A fantasy series in which children of color can see themselves! I love Corinne's courage and the unconditional love for her family that causes her to face her fears. Further, the allegorical aspect of the story is whose land this? is something we can connect to the treatment of natives by white Europeans, as they colonized what are now the United States and Canada. I add this trilogy to the list of books from which children can choose for their fantasy book clubs.
   Fantasic Creatures!
I did not know what to expect when I began reading this story, as I had never heard of a Jumbie before. But the different jumbies mentioned by Tracey were unique and scary. I wouldn't want to cross paths with all of them! This Enthralling story is original! I can 't wait to start the sequel!
It is a true adventure with vivid characters and imagery that play like a movie in our minds
My seven-year-old and I devoured this book. It is a true adventure with vivid characters and imagery that plays in our minds like a film. Why have these incredible monsters not been on our radar? Tracey thanks you, Tracey.
