Book Overview

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, a professor shares the lessons he's learned--about living in the present, building a legacy, and taking full advantage of the time you have--in this life-changing classic.

We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand. --Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled The Last Lecture. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull over the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because time is all you have . . . and you may find one day that you have less than you think). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

   Time well spent!
This is one of the best books I have read. As soon as I started reading, I was hooked. After finishing the book, I even went to YouTube to watch the video of this event. I think this book will resonate with all of it some degree. I would highly encourage everyone to read this book. You won't be disappointed.

I'm glad I finally read it.
This is a very inspiring set of lessons in memoir fashion that talks about achieving your childhood dreams, he said. It was Randy Pausch's last lecture and he decided to make it count and tell what he had learned, even though he had received a diagnosis of terminal cancer. This is more about how to actually live, not just how to achieve those dreams because if you live your life well, those dreams will come to you, he said. A very heartwarming story. In a generous gesture of compassion, McCartney said: "I got teary at the end.

I read it then bought 8 more for family and friends
It's a terrible book, full of lies and half-truths. I am emotional person but did not shed a tear throughout this book, Mr. Dhaliwal said. His family, his parents and all who touched his life in his younger years and helped mold him into the adult he was and his lovely wife Jai will live on through them. He contributed to who all the greats were as well. And, because I finished it so quickly, I ordered 8 more for our adult children and a few friends who are very special to me.

   A Masterpiece
The Last Lecture is hands down, my all time favorite book. It's a quick read that's full of amusing and heartwarming life lessons.

Based on the life of Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, This book serves as Randy's "Last Lecture" an event that takes place when a professor retires. However, we quickly discover that Randy's retirement is not due to age, but rather aggressive pancreatic cancer. In a mere 206 pages, Randy shares gem after gem which allows readers to experience a paradigm shift of what it means to really live.

Beautifully written, thoroughly entertaining and a timeless treasure, The Last Lecture is sure to become a time honored classic.

   Absolutely fantastic
Will I ever hear the words written again? It's just that I hope I never forget them. In "The Power of Living," Raymond said, "it's all about the relationships.

   Good read
Young parents, don't judge your child by what they do in the bedroom. Anyone who has ever wondered about purpose in life will find the book extremely useful. Ellwood, who stars in a revival of "The Lord's Supper," will get something from the book.

Best / most uplifting book I have ever read!
Several of my friends and neighbors have bought copies of this book. I use them for graduation gifts. Sometimes I hand them off to people I know who seem to be having a hard time keeping their spirits up. Yes, I do a lot of reading, but this is the only book I have ever read more than once on purpose! It made me sit back and take stock of my own life and what is truly important, he said. But I wish I had read this when my children were babies because then maybe I would have felt like we had to have so many rules in the house. "There's just that old saying," Gen. Eisenhower said of using the term "blackmail." pick your battles—with the philosophy and advice given in this book about kids, marriage, work, family, etc.—you realize what is worth actually fighting for or just letting go.
