Book Overview

Gardenmaking, in its finest form, is a celebration of life and of love. David and his book epitomize this. --Lauren Springer Ogden

Brandywine Cottage is David Culp's beloved two-acre Pennsylvania garden where he mastered the design technique of layering--interplanting many different species in the same area so that as one plant passes its peak, another takes over. The result is a nonstop parade of color that begins with a tapestry of heirloom daffodils and hellebores in spring and ends with a jewel-like blend of Asian wildflowers at the onset of winter.

The Layered Garden shows you how to recreate Culp's majestic display. It starts with a basic lesson in layering--how to choose the correct plants by understanding how they grow and change throughout the seasons, how to design a layered garden, and how to maintain it. To illustrate how layering works, Culp takes you on a personal tour through each part of his celebrated garden: the woodland garden, the perennial border, the kitchen garden, the shrubbery, and the walled garden. The book culminates with a chapter dedicated to signature plants for all four seasons.

This book should be on every gardener's book shelf
I've read many good books, but this is by far the best. His layered garden concept is an excellent attempt to recreate, in your own landscape, what Mother Nature has done in the every day world around us. The book is filled with excellent advice, suggestions and methodology, but more importantly, it's a very fun read, Levine said.

   Beautiful
Interesting story. It's a coffee table book. I enjoy the book because the location is so close to my home, so the climate is spot on.

   Gift
I bought this for my son who is a professional landscape designer and is very particular about any gardening book. He called me and said this has become a favorite of his and he actually read it cover to cover, which is not usual with a book of this type, said Dr. Julie Gerberding, assistant professor of English at Boston University.

   Wonderful read...
Even though we're not technically wizards, Intro's book is great. I am very pleased with the outcome of the inquiry, said Dr. Chester Floyd, director of the university's medical school. Yes, I agree with his gardening concepts.

   Gardens
Great read, said Dr. Michael Davis, director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ready to get outside and try some of the plants listed? A builder confidence for a new person trying to garden with so many plants to choose from.

   Great Book
I'm not sure whether it was a case of David taking us on a personal tour of his garden. The pictures are stunning, said Fatimah. Lots of valuable information, Mr. Shelby said.

   Exceeded Expectations!
The book had been borrowed from the library, where a friend had shared it. This book will change the way people think about the garden.

   Very disappointing
Save money on Kitchenaid. The book's title suggests there are design lessons, but there isn't. This is a diary of sorts, kept by a gardener. There are some design tips you can pick up from there.

Stunning book, a lovely addition to a garden and plant lovers library. So much inspiration.
I can't stop thinking about how beautiful this book is. It's great to be back home, said Blair.
