Laura Ingalls Wilder grew up on the prairie, where food was something one worked for, cooking was a big part of daily life, and mealtime was a chance to gather with family and give thanks. By watching Pa hunt and farm and by helping Ma prepare the food, Laura learned the pleasures that come from a family working together. Laura also experienced the joy that comes from sharing food, made with love and care, with family and friends.
Here are over 100 unique recipes celebrating the foods and cooking techniques of Laura's pioneer childhood. Taken from dishes described in the beloved Little House books, these recipes were carefully researched by Barbara M. Walker and tested in her own kitchen. From pancake men and pumpkin pie to vanity cakes and ice cream, these recipes give adults and children alike the chance to experience a taste of Laura's childhood, reminding us of the connection between the food on the table and the work involved in getting it there.

My eight-year-old niece loves Little House. What a great way to practice some of it for her by bringing some of the dishes home for her! Her mother grew up on LH so that they plan to work together through some of these recipes.

Granddaughter's birthday

This was a free gift! When she opened her gifts, she was sooo excited and pleased with the LHP craft book's paper dolls. But when she opened this, she couldn 't stop eating, squirting, and hugging this cookbook. When she comes to visit me, she loves to cook with me. She cooks with her father and her mother and couldn 't wait to try the recipes in this cookbook!

hardly any LHOTP illustrations??

I received the revised version with the orange cover, it was all recipes and some excerpts from the original series of the books, but there were hardly any illustrations from the Little House books, and I was disappointed in the book, and I will donate it to our local library.

Great for any Little House on the Prairie reader.

This is a must have for all LH fans. My daughter read all the books and watched every show of the series several times. She probably will not make many of them, but enjoys reading about the difference in cooking then vs. now.

Love this book!

After testing it several times from the library, it was time to buy my own copy! It would be even better if it were hardcover, but the content is priceless. The author has researched and experimented to come up with several recipes of the many-appetizing foods that Laura Ingalls Wilder so temptingly described in her books. To make it even better, many of garth Williams'illustrations are included, as are portions of the books that correspond to each recipe. I just want to read the book for the reading pleasure ''. I have tried only one of the recipes over the years - Ma's apple turnovers. I tried making the dough out of full wheat flour, but they were very heavy.

Updated but will not be as loved as the first edition
Derived From Web , Sep 21, 2018
HarperCollins has so altered the cover and interior of this beloved tie-in, Little House! Like the author Barbara Walker wrote in her acknowledgments, I am resisting the changes in design, but am accustomed to the beautiful food photographs, but less of the iconic Garth Williams illustrations. I like the re-formatting of the recipes in a standard cookbook style, and Laura's gingerbread has been added to the collection. Fortunately, Walker's extensive historical text remains faithful to the life and times of the Ingalls - Wilder lives. My own 1979 edition is so marked-up and sprayed and filled with memories that I will probably not use this new volume except for gift-giving.

Hard Work and Good Eats
Derived From Web , May 7, 2018
I love everything about cookbooks and my collection would not be complete without The Little House Cookbook. This was in a time gone by and makes me very humble when I read all the accounts of Pioneer Life. The recipes in the cookbook are simple, but very good and I like to drink a cup of coffee and read it like a book. It takes to return to a slower time, but really, it was a lot of work for pioneer people. Sandy Hatton is located in the town of Sandy Hatton.

My 8 yr old daughter and 3 yr old son watch the show, so when we saw this book, we had to have it. I love the little excerpts from the book with a lot of recipes. The recipes are things that you would actually eat and very easy to make. We love having this book as part of our collection!
