Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

On the Manhattan bank of the Hudson River, a small lighthouse--made of steel and painted bright red--proudly protects boats with his faithful beam. One day a great expanse of gray steel, which also shines a bright light into the fog and darkness, is built over it. The little red lighthouse feels insignificant and useless in comparison but soon learns that . . . small can be mighty

   Wonderful book!
I may be biased because I was raised about 10 miles from where the little red lighthouse currently resides, but I found this book an absolute delight and ordered it for my grandchildren who live practically under the bridge in Fort Lee and can see the lighthouse across the river. I shared the story with other adults who lived around the area and are also delighted by the story. Amazingly, none of us heard the lighthouse until the book was brought to my attention. I do not wish to insinuate that the book would appeal only to New York New Jersey residents because it is charming with historical illustrations and because it is fiction based on beautiful facts enriches the story even more.

A wonderful little story, passed along to a new generation
When my son was young, we took a walk along the Hudson River side of the New Jersey to look at the lighthouse after reading this book. I was delighted to find a picture we took that day, and so thrilled to be able to pass this new edition of the book to my grandson.

   Wonderful story
I love lighthouses and remember this book as a little girl being read to me. I bought this book to share with a new great Niece and I hope she will share my love for these wonderful beacons as she grows older.

A place out of my childhood
This is a real book about a delightful lighthouse that I visited when I was a child going to school in New York City. It is the second time I purchased it for young relatives to grow into.

   so so
It is fashioned old and the kids don't really understand. It is ok to read to a 4 and 6 year old.

   EXCELLENT Childrens Book!!!
This children's story about a real light house in New York Harbor is a beautiful story with a poignant and interesting ending that most children would find very interesting and amusing! This story is highly recommended!

Honoring the value of things forgotten.
My granddaughter in New York received this book from a friend who gave her a history lesson on that neck of her woods. The history of the watercolor paintings of the artist and how he and his wife worked together to capture the image of the little red lighthouse shows children we care and value our history. Because something has served its purpose and is no longer needed, does not mean we throw it away. This warm and delightful book captures and continues to send this message of value.

The book arrived on time and is exactly what I ordered.
I bought this book for a baby gift for a couple who love to travel. When they travel to New York City, they can have the advantage of knowing the story of the Little Red Lighthouse and taking their child to visit when they are older. This book really makes the lighthouse and the building of the George Washington Bridge alive, and gives an appreciation for the history of the commonly known things that are taken for granted in these busy days.

Good children's book about the importance of everyone
I gave this book four stars because it is a good, solid book with illustrations and the amount of text, but it is a little old fashioned children's book. It is a little long and wordy to read to a very young child, but would be very appropriate for older children and those who just started reading.

It was one of my favorite stories when I was growing up because it describes ...
I bought this book for my grandchild after attending a wedding, where her uncle and his bride were photographed after the wedding ceremony on the Palisades overlooking the GW Bridge, and I was able to point out the lighthouse for her. She said that she had never seen the book before and became a treasure of her trip to New York City. It was one of my favorite stories when I grew up, because it describes the importance of one or some thing that is often overlooked because it is small or out of the way, yet serves an important function in the community.
