'The stoic, detached, empirical, hard-boiled, penetrating, realist mind of James Burnham is something to behold, to admire, to emulate' - National Review
A classic work of political theory and practise, this book makes available an account of the modern Machiavellians, a remarkable group who have been influential in Europe and practically unknown in the United States: Gaetano Mosca, Georges Sorel, Robert Michels and Vilfredo Pareto. In addition, there is a long section on Machiavelli himself.
James Burnham contends that the writings of these men hold the key both to the truth about politics and to the preservation of political liberty.
The Machiavellians: Defenders Of Freedom is 258 pages long.

It is a challenging read, but if you want to learn about Machiavelli and his perspectives on the human condition in political and military strategy, go for it. If you are stuck, there are great YouTube videos to help you understanding who was Nicolo Machiavelli.

If you want to get a non-partisan view of what politics is all about from a nice POV, read a zoomed out book. It blows the myth of democracy '', so don 't read it if you think that democracy '' is some sacred virtue. He presents the concept of Bonnapartism '', which explains how democratically elected officials use the concept of democracy to justify acting like dictators. Once you see it, you won 't be able to unsee it.

Handbook of realpolitik
Derived From Web , Sep 6, 2021
Eye-opening : But the first section is on Dante, whom he gives as an anti-Machiavellian example. It was odd to put it first and it doesn 't help his point, which has not yet been made, nor does it act effectively as a counter example. If you don 't like the beginning, keep it going. Later on, lots of gems were found.

Political Study and Analysis
Derived From Web , Jan 10, 2021
I've always looked at this book, as the theme of Machiavellian fascinated me. I confess that I found the book to be very dated ''. So much so that I had to check people mentioned in the text, such as Mr Wallace and others. But it is an expression of political thought and study and a rare example.

Burnham and his Machiavellian subjects cut through the facade as how the government works to explain the science behind how it actually does.

James Burnham's classic text
Derived From Web , Jun 22, 2019
The Machiavellian is long out of print, so that this recently released version reduces the financial barrier to entry '' by quite a bit. Of course, the *intellectual* barrier to entry is much higher, but anyone even considering purchasing this book is likely to meet this criterion as well. Very useful for sharpening analytic insight via the cold eye of realism, stripping away political pretensions and revealing the inevitable will to power of an entrenched elite, the real rulers in the rhetorical realm.
