Book Overview

Do you believe in magic? Inspired by a real event, this is the fictional tale of a little girl whose parents win Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction.

Tracy does. When she starts using Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick, won by her parents at a charity auction, she suddenly becomes the best player on her hockey team. She hasn't become a better player overnight--it's the magic of The Great One's stick But while Tracy's star is on the rise, Wayne's is steadily dropping. He's in the greatest slump of his career. Tracy knows that Wayne needs his magic stick back, but she needs it, too. The question is: Who needs it more?

Even children who have no knowledge of hockey will be entertained by this book and impressed by its message. Maloney and Zekauskas have scored a winning goal with this one.--School Library Journal

Writing okay / Hockey fans will still enjoy it
My son loves hockey and has thus enjoyed the book. I thought it was okay--the writing at times seemed forced into rhyming. I was not overly impressed with the writing.

A real treat for kids and adults
My 2 and 4 year old likes hockey and they love this book. We picked it up at the library and were very pleasantly surprised to find such a modern book. It is about a family that ends up buying Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction. The daughter plays hockey and the stick helps her play better. But in the mean time, Wayne Gretzky goes into a slump without him. The girl decides that she must return the stick to him. I can not do justice to the book though. It is a rhyming verse book that is so easy to read and there is a lot of humor in it, but it has a nice lesson. My children have tons of books, but they love this one and is one that I do not get sick of reading. Thank you to the author for something new and refreshing.

A Favorite for my 2.5 year old
My 2.5 year old insists to him that I read it every night. He is quite obsessed with hockey. Though the book may be a good book for an older age group as well, it is still perfect for the younger crowd.

It has a nice flow, with rhyming sentences
I bought it because the main character is a girl and I think that more sports books should include female roles. It has a rhyming flow, with beautiful sentences. But the plot is lacking a bit of. Overall, a great bedtime story for the young hockey enthusiast boy or girl!
