A new selection from the national epic of India

Originally composed in Sanskrit sometime between 400 BC and 400 AD, The Mahabharata-with one hundred thousand stanzas of verse-is one of the longest poems in existence. At the heart of the saga is a conflict between two branches of a royal family whose feud culminates in a titanic eighteen-day battle. Exploring such timeless subjects as dharma (duty), artha (purpose), and kama (pleasure) in a mythic world of warfare, magic, and beauty, this is a magnificent and legendary Hindu text of immense importance to the culture of the Indian subcontinent.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world.    Clean and crisp copy
I bought it to read for a class, but will enjoy rereading my favorite stories to my family and friends. I highly recommend reading this important and inspiring story ''.

   Incomplete and confusing.
This book omits so many details that the actions of people in the story become inexplicable, e.g. when Draupadi is pursued by Pandavas for harassing Jayadratha. Even names used are possible incorrect, if not completely uncommon, e.g. God of Wealth. I realize that its a hard task for a person who is not too familiar with culture, but so many omissions make this book best as a primer.

Thousand Oaks Library is a great place. I used to go there to hear talks by Ray Bradbury.
The book is in fine shape. While I would like the full Mahabharata, this includes a good part.

   Great Mahabharata Storytelling
Mahabharata - storytelling in a comprehensive version of the great Mahabharata. I wish that the Bhagavad Gita was better represented.
