Book Overview

Instant Wall Street Journal Bestseller

Congratulations, you're a manager After you pop the champagne, accept the shiny new title, and step into this thrilling next chapter of your career, the truth descends like a fog: you don't really know what you're doing.

That's exactly how Julie Zhuo felt when she became a rookie manager at the age of 25. She stared at a long list of logistics--from hiring to firing, from meeting to messaging, from planning to pitching--and faced a thousand questions and uncertainties. How was she supposed to spin teamwork into value? How could she be a good steward of her reports' careers? What was the secret to leading with confidence in new and unexpected situations?

Now, having managed dozens of teams spanning tens to hundreds of people, Julie knows the most important lesson of all: great managers are made, not born. If you care enough to be reading this, then you care enough to be a great manager.

The Making of a Manager is a modern field guide packed everyday examples and transformative insights, including:

* How to tell a great manager from an average manager (illustrations included)
* When you should look past an awkward interview and hire someone anyway
* How to build trust with your reports through not being a boss
* Where to look when you lose faith and lack the answers

Whether you're new to the job, a veteran leader, or looking to be promoted, this is the handbook you need to be the kind of manager you wish you had.

Great and straightforward take in managing.
A perspective on what it takes to manage. If I choose to be one, this will be the kind of manager that I'll thrive on.

5
   Great resource.
The book provides a starting line for new managers, as well as re-examining some of the lessons seasoned managers may have missed.

4
   Practical and light reading
There are anecdotes that support the point she's making. Suggestions that can be implemented right away and a broader vision for management are what I take with me.

5
   Great book
It's worth the time and money. It is very easy to read. The scenarios presented in the book can be put into action by you. I would recommend this author's books.

5
Very nice frameworks that are supported by real life examples
All of the ideas, tips and frameworks in the book are based on real life experiences so the suggestions in the book are not out of this world or very hypothetical.

2
   Disappointing
I had high hopes for this book, but it didn't hit me. I think I was not the target audience. If you've ever led a team in any capacity, you're not the right target audience for this book. Many of the lessons will not apply to your industry if you work in an industry outside of tech. If you've never been in a leadership position or worked with wealthy, liberal, coastal millenials in technology, you could probably get something out of this book. You could listen to the author's interviews on the podcasts.

Get to the point, this should've been a quarter the length
The book is about becoming a manager. Kim Scott's Radical Candor is a good one. I wanted the editor to help cut the passages so that the core lessons and practices that Julie found effective could be seen. Not a fan of the tone of the book. The book was filled with too much fluff and it felt like a book from the internet.

   Absolutely Indispensable.
I wish I had this book when I started managing people. It's relevant, thoughtful, and actionable. I know that it will stay on my bookshelf.

   Great Actionable Examples!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for some managerial tips. She gives actionable examples of each point she makes, not just the generic "wisdom" that a lot of books write about.
