Book Overview

Two of our foremost poets provide here a lucid, straightforward primer that looks squarely at some of the headaches and mysteries of poetic form: a book for readers who have always felt that an understanding of form (sonnet, ballad, villanelle, sestina, among others) would enhance their appreciation of poetry. Tracing the exuberant history of forms, they devote one chapter to each form, offering explanation, close reading, and a rich selection of examplars that amply demonstrate the power and possibility of that form.

   Book is 30% non-poetry
I think it is rather poor '' as a textbook. Many styles of poetry, such as Haiku and prose, are not even covered. 70% of the book is interviews with the Poetry - Elite and references to the work they want to buy.

   Beautifully Organized, Concise explanations
I love this book absolutely ''. One of my best poetry books I buy. Note that this book does not address the basics, such as meter, syllablic stress, rhyme scheme, internal rhyme, etc. Great for an intermediate poet looking to put their basic knowledge to the test and learn how to use it to create various forms of poetry.

   Disappointing
No dates, place, societal or historical background information of any kind is included for the majority of the poets and poems provided in this selection. The lack of context, which could have been provided with the addition of only two or three lines of additional text, severely detracts from what could have been an excellent book. The fact that there are paltry introductory pages to each section that indulge in vague facile generalizations about the form in question, and that a few famous poets are singled out in special Close-Ups '' for their use of it, only emphasizes what is missing and the over all inadequacy of the manner in which the material is presented. I look forward to when a better book of these provocative, often interesting poems will come out in the future.

Yes - it is "like new"... omg, l love it!
I have ordered this book for myself. ... and you know when they say like new, how you kinda expect to see a few dog-eared and maybe a few handwritten notes in the margin here and there... Nope, when ThriftBooks say like new that's exactly what is on your way. I was shocked! I am truly happy now! Today order. And it is a great book!

Not as many poetic forms as I hoped for.
For its size, I thought there would be a whole lot more poetic forms in this book. Here are the forms of the Villanelle-sestina-pentina-flat-sonnet ballad-relent verse-elegy- pastoral-ode-open form. There are some decent examples for these forms ; however, a simple A, B,A,B rhyme template is not shown. I found myself googling the template forms of all above. I expected this kind of simplicity... as well as some well-known forms of fiveuain, concrete, haiku, black out erasure... so if you are too... look elsewhere.

Love this resource--for each poetic form (ballad
Love this resource for each poetic form. It gives a concise description of the form, a history of the form, explains why poets use this form and discusses how it is used by contemporary poets.
