Book Overview

The author of Gutbliss and one of today's preeminent gastroenterologists distills the latest research on the microbiome into a practical program for boosting overall health.

Michael Pollan's widely discussed New York Times article, Some of My Best Friends Are Germs, was just the tip of the iceberg. The microbiome--the collective name for the trillions of bacteria that live in our gut--is today's hottest medical news topic. Synthesizing the latest findings, Dr. Robynne Chutkan explains how the standard Western diet and lifestyle are starving our microbiome, depleting the good bugs that keep us healthy and encouraging overgrowth of exactly the wrong type of bacteria. The resulting imbalance makes us more prone to disease and obesity and negatively affects our metabolism, our hormones, our cravings, our immunity, and even our genes. But beyond the science, what sets this book apart is Dr. Chutkan's powerful three-level program for optimizing your gut bacteria for good health.
Dr. Chutkan shares:

  • Why hand-sanitizing gels and antibiotics are stripping our bodies of their natural protective systems
  • Essential prebiotics and probiotics
  • Recipes with ingredients that replenish the microbiome for each rehab level
  • Cutting-edge research on the connection between the microbiome and the brain
  • An intro to the stool Read More chevron_right

   Disappointed...
A lot of basic information, redundant. If you are looking for more information in depth, look elsewhere.

An intuitive and fad-free approach to healthy living.
This book was a healthy approach to a fascinating lifestyle. I am an MD and very frustrated at how little the Western Medical Community knows about nutrition and diet, as they relate to medical complaints that we see in our patients all the time. This book will personally help me, as well as providing me with medical advice to offer patients and family friends. And the recipes look amazing - I am inspired to try them all. Some parts of the book got a bit recurring and a bit preached, but don 't let that stop you from integrating her message into your life! I recommend this book to everyone I know.

Chutkan has written a great book outlining how the micro biome may be damaged
I already follow the specific carbohydrate diet, but I was curious about what this book was about. Dr. Chutkan has written a great book outlining how the microbiome can be damaged and what we can do to repair or possibly replace a damaged microbiome. I was particularly intrigued by her idea of living dirty. I'll bathe a little less, maybe. I recommend this read if you have autoimmune or other digestive problems.

   Heal yourself from inside out!
If you want to improve your immunity and learn how to educate it, read an outstanding book. I do not follow conventional treatment for any illness or disease. Man made pharma drugs are not my thing and will never be. This book outlines that if you write what Dr. Chutkan does in this book, your health will improve. The majority of your immune system is located in your gut, so take care of it and heal yourself from the inside out.

Excellent health guide with some really tasty recipes
Robynne gave me a new appreciation for my gut bacteria. I read this about 3 months ago and have been practicing much of what she recommends and my health has considerably improved.

that the importance of Bacteria and the increase incidence of Leaky Gut is wonderful, I have worked many years with traditional
Very impressed, have not yet finished, but to hear from an MD that the importance of Bacteria and the increase in the incidence of Leaky gut is wonderful. I have worked with traditional MDs for many years and was always amazed at how important this is for autoimmune disease and basically all inflammatory diseases!

For anyone concerned about their long-term health, essential information is vital. Beautifully explained in non-tech language.

Very well written in easy to understand laymans terms
Very well written in easy to understand layman terms. Made me realize that before I take antibiotics that I may not need, there could be serious consequences regarding my gut. Would recommend to anyone who is concerned about the readily available antibiotics that doctors prescribe.

   Good information
I firmly believe that healthy eating and exercise can cure, if not improve a lot of health problems that are over-medicated. This was an interesting read, but I found it a little redundant. I also had to skip the chapter on fecal transfer, which has been proven to be life saving, but I just wanted to know the ins and outs... literally.

Chutkan is one of my favorite doctor authors
Dr. Chutkan is one of my favorite medical authors. I love how she is able to simplify the topic of microbiome and make it very understandable for non-medical folks like myself. Unfortunately, she does not seem to be open to the idea of working with food sensitivities due to unreliable testing. I hope that she and other doctors would consider the MRT blood test as part of their protocol. As a result of the MRT and the follow-up LEAP diet, my son and I were greatly helped. I wonder if the difficult case she writes about could have been further helped by eliminating reactive foods.
