Purpose

It is full of stories, of insights into ordinary lives lived under extraordinary circumstances. It is a gentle guide to help us see a way to live a life of purpose exactly where we are, with the people we see both emotionally and physically. I am grateful for the nudge to love my neighbour not through grand gestures, smiles and conversations, but through simple everyday life.

Nice book, lovely author, but unfortunately there's nothing new here

When I read, I always have a pencil by my side, ready to outline the bits of inspiration. It is well-written and heart-felt, but here there is just nothing new. The author is so beautiful and does such meaningful work that I would LOVE to recommend her book. However, plenty of other authors come from a similar place : Kathrina Kenison, Jen Hatmaker, Glennon Doyle, Jerusalem Greer, MaryAnn McKibben Dana, to name a few. I find their writing so much more impactful. In all fairness, if I had read this book first, I would have found it more powerful, but there are so many bloggers - authors sharing their experiences of following God's call in the midst of daily life, and this one does not stand out from the rest.

A Christian Who Doesn't Scare Me

For its authenticity, I gave this book 5 stars. I practiced Buddhism and Shannan is a Christian who doesn 't scare me. She reaffirmed for me the message of Jesus and all the great masters who taught the importance of connection, love and small acts of kindness. In these divisive times, how refreshing to read the words of someone leading, for example, not preaching theology. I have often been uprooted, lost many loved ones to death and struggle daily with the challenges that life provides. This book lifted and motivated me to keep moving, keep meditating and keep eye contact. Today I will see my neighborhood, smile at everyone I meet and walk through everything anew and with gratitude!

For the last couple of years, I have been a fan of Shannan Martin, and this book was as good as I hoped it would be! Shannan uses this book to tell stories from her own life of what it has looked like to sink roots into a place and love people in very ordinary ways. She is part storyteller, part cheerleader, part vision-casterer - a great mix of all three! I have recommended this book to all my friends because if we could truly catch this vision, the way we live would change, as would our neighborhoods and churches. She points us to the upside ways of the Kingdom of God and encourages us to run hard after that!

Doing God's work in the places you have been planted

After growing up in a conservative, Christian environment, where a great emphasis is placed on your ministry, there have been many times as an adult where I feel as though I fall short. I don 't have a popular blog or lead a Bible study or lead a youth group, or do any of the things I traditionally learned were ministry things to do. Shannan Martin's book gives readers a revolutionary concept : your ministry doesn 't have to be big and loud, and in public. We do God's work by being present with the people He has placed in our lives. This is a compelling and challenging read, and I am so thankful for Martin's words in my world.

Shannan Martin has such an engaging and authentic way of sharing her story and telling what she is learning about life, love, God and community. “The Ministry of Ordinary Places †is a series of stories and experiences, as she and her family lean into the work they have been given and learn to love their place. It is a good reminder that following God was not supposed to be complicated. We are often so busy looking for something important and big '' that we miss what is right in front of us. After all, our purpose is not so mysterious. We get to love and be deeply planted right where we are planted, by whomever happens to be near, to dig in and bloom where you are planted, to draw a wider circle and redefine community, neighbor and purpose.
