Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

In this imaginative adventure from Newbery Medal-winning author Beverly Cleary, a young mouse named Ralph is thrown into a world of excitement when a boy and his shiny toy motorcycle check in to the Mountain View Inn.

When the ever-curious Ralph spots Keith's red toy motorcycle, he vows to ride it. So when Keith leaves the bike unattended in his room one day, Ralph makes his move. But with all this freedom (and speed ) come a lot of obstacles. Whether dodging a rowdy terrier or keeping his nosy cousins away from his new wheels, Ralph has a lot going on And with a pal like Keith always looking out for him, there's nothing this little mouse can't handle.

This timeless classic now features a foreword written by New York Times bestselling author Kate DiCamillo, as well as an exclusive interview with Beverly Cleary herself.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle is perfect for independent reading or for shared reading at home or in a classroom. This fun story is the first of a trilogy, along with Runaway Ralph and Ralph S. Mouse, all inspired by the author's hope to create appealing books for boys and girls--and by the sight of her son playing with toy cars.

   Speeding motorcycle
My child wrote this review. Everything about this story is perfect. When the boy talks to the mouse while riding a motorcycle is my favorite part. I would like to talk to a mouse as well.

After listening to the first 6 books of our favorite, Hank the Cowdog
After listening to the first 6 books of our favorite, Hank the Cowdog, I decided to expand my 5 yo grandson's horizon with another of our family favorites. I have read all of them to my children but this is the first time we' ve listened to it on a CD. It is wonderful. He was attracted to it from the start. The voice for Ralph's mother is very annoying to me, I have one minor negative to mention. It sounds like a stereotypical Jewish or Bronx mother. It doesn't bother my grandson. I was surprised that his cousins and siblings were being mean to him, but I don't make any comments about it. We listened to Runaway Ralph after this one. I will be reading that one to my grandson because it's not on the CD that I could find. As I read, he can do sound effects.

Kids loved it!!! Broad range of readers enjoyed it!
My students loved it! I enjoyed reading it again as an adult. Most never read it. I have a lot of students this year. My reluctant readers and my students were hooked by the storyline. There was enough drama for my readers. The students wanted to read to find out what would happen next. My readers did not become discouraged because the reading level was low. I liked listening to the conversations students had about the characters. The next book in the series was read by most of the people. The kids were excited to learn more about the detailed mice that I found in our Reading rext. I am very happy that I picked this for my book study. The kids really liked the 1980's movie I found through Prime. It's very '80's cute.

   Never fails
My 3 rd graders read this in 2000. They requested to read Runaway Ralph. My children enjoyed it when they read it with me about a decade later. 10 years after that, read with my youngest. He enjoyed it. I used this as a challenge to get him to read again. He did very well. We added some unfamiliar words to our vocabulary list. He's excited to start.

Ralph S. Mouse-The mouse and the motorcycle. Loved by my kids, I hope it stands the test of time!
I remember many nights reading this one to my children at our nightly reading and it was always one more page. The book was in good shape and used acceptable. I was surprised at how fragile the pages were but I guess 1990 was a little farther in the past than I remembered. I know my nephew will read it with care and I hope he likes it.

a classic keeps on entertaining a new generation
My daughter came across this book at the library a couple months ago and she loved it so much we had to extend the borrowing period. Thankfully, this is still in print in hardcover, and we needed a copy of our own. My daughter can't get enough of the story, despite the fact that it has dated references.

I have to read more about Ralph!
As an adult, I' ve moved on to children's classics, like Stephen King. Do not judge. There were a couple of moral lessons in ' The Mouse and the Motorcycle', but the other 99% was fun, hilarious and sweet. The mental image of a mouse with a pin- pong ball helmet on his head is priceless. I have to read the others.

   Enjoyable
The Mouse family live in a hotel. Kevin and his family are staying in a hotel where Kevin wants to ride his toy motorcycle. It is the ideal size for a mouse. He gets into a lot of trouble when he gets a chance to ride it, which puts his family in trouble. Some benefits for his family are also given to him by Ralph. When there is a tragedy, Ralph is there to help. This story was enjoyable. It was a lot of fun. I liked that he was thoughtful to his family. He knows when to admit he's in trouble and when to try to find a solution to his family's hardship. I like the courage he shows when Kevin needs help. I enjoy Ms. Cleary's books. I will enjoy them no matter what my age is.
