The New Dictionary Of Cultural Literacy
Book Overview
In this fast-paced information age, how can Americans know what's really important and what's just a passing fashion? Now more than ever, we need a source that concisely sums up the knowledge that matters to Americans -- the people, places, ideas, and events that shape our cultural conversation. With more than six thousand entries, The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy is that invaluable source.
Wireless technology. Gene therapy. NAFTA. In addition to the thousands of terms described in the original Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, here are more than five hundred new entries to bring Americans' bank of essential knowledge up to date. The original entries have been fully revised to reflect recent changes in world history and politics, American literature, and, especially, science and technology. Cultural icons that have stood the test of time (Odysseus, Leaves of Grass, Cleopatra, the Taj Mahal, D-Day) appear alongside entries on such varied concerns as cryptography, the digital divide, the European Union, Kwanzaa, pheromones, SPAM, Type A and Type B personalities, Web browsers, and much, much more.
As our world becomes more global and interconnected, it grows smaller through the terms and touchstones that unite us. As E. D. Hirsch writes in the preface, Community is built up of shared knowledge and values -- the same shared knowledge that is taken for granted when

Nerd paradise

Obviously this isn 't a book for everyone, but if you're a buff or a master about anything, you 'll love it. It is a great book if you want to be literary on any topic that might come up in conversation. Modern society is increasingly complex, but this book has the core things that you should know. If you want to never start in a position of ignorance, this is the place to find yourself. I like to play this game in which a person reads the definition and your friends guess the word. It's really fun and you learn a lot about all sorts of things. It always feels like right when you're there.

Heard Dr. Hirsch being interviewed by Milt Rosenberg. Intrigued by Hirsch's idea of core knowledge with respect to literacy. While surfing around Amazon, looking at the body of Dr. Hirsch's work, found this dictionary and bought a new but almost used copy. Although it is literally a dictionary. I read a few pages at a time through it. I learned a few things that I didn't know before. I am pleasantly surprised, however, that I appear to be literate. Important note : This is really a dictionary. Not a book to read cover to cover literally in a few days, but to read a few pages every day.

I had a copy of this book several years ago, but left it behind when I moved to a new teaching position. It is a great source of information and is useful in delivering high school information lessons with my background students.

Dictionary not storybook

For some reason, I thought this would be like the kid's version, where you have a lot of excerpts to read. But its more of a dictionary, where you find a name and look up a short description of it.
