This Description may be from another edition of this product.

A New York Times bestseller, The Night Gardener is a Victorian ghost story with shades of Washington Irving and Henry James. More than just a spooky tale, it's also a moral fable about human greed and the power of storytelling.
The Night Gardener follows two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives. With Auxier's exquisite command of language, The Night Gardener is a mesmerizing read and a classic in the making.

Scary, heartwarming, great characters. Could not put it down.
I say this first. That's probably enough for you to read this review. I am constantly looking for that next great book that brings me away from my daily problems and worries to another place where anything is possible and magic rules. Night Gardener was that book's night keeper. I haven 't read a book in a while that kept me reading all night. This was one that did. What a great story! Jonathan Auxier has not read any books by Charles Meredith before. I found him on a search and am so glad that I found this book. Scary, heartwarming and I love the characters. They are easy to identify and I really cared about them. The Legend of the Type is Great! ( cf. Auxier, thank you for the nine years you put into this book.

   Deliciously dark
A delightfully dark middle grade story about two missing children, a girl, Molly and her little lame brother. The children make their way through the thick woods to a rather scary mansion built around a mysteriously old tree in hopes of finding employment. By some quick thinking, Molly secures a job as a housekeeper, a six-year-old girl and her brutish brother. Soon Emily and her brother discover that things are anything but normal in the mansion. Molly begins to have nightmares and has to clean up after someone walks around the mansion at night, leaving muddy footprints everywhere. There is a mysterious locked room that Molly has been directed to never open. The family becomes more sickly day by day and Molly intends to get to the bottom of it. Upper middle school students who enjoy scary stories will be thrilled by this book.

Fantastic story that begs to be read aloud
The Irish Lily adds to the Gothic feel in the writing. The story asks what you would be willing to sacrifice for the thing you want most, a good discussion point for everyone in the family.
