One of my favorite WWII historical fiction novels!

FELL IN LOVE WITH THE. CHARACTERS!! My favorite (and she will be your favorite too) is Isabelle. She’s so strong and fierce. Fearless. The author did an amazing job developing the characters and storylines. It’s a must-read for historical fiction lovers!!

A novellist tells a story. I expected a lot more. The role of women during WWII France was promised in the story. The author quickly became a cliché. The characters have no depth. The sub- themes show a lack of imagination by the idealist young girl who longs for love and approval from her father, who died in World War I. Give it a good shake and it will be the best seller! The plot is good but the writing is bad. I felt like I was watching an episode of The Bold and the Beautiful. I have to say that the author's description of everyday life during WWII felt very inaccurate. There are a lot of good books. You can improve.

I just finished this book and I wanted to like it but it wasn't good. Is it possible that the author made a list of all the bad things that could happen and then created the characters to make them miserable? I know the author loves to write stories that make people cry but this book was just ridiculous. If the author was trying to add more misery to the story, the part where she dies is just stupid.

A novel with pretensions is full of factual errors. I have read many stories about the effects of the Second World War on the occupied people. I was a part of that moment in European history. This is the worst attempt at giving a taste of everyday life or exceptional behavior that civil society has seen. The exploitation of the subject, always researched and depicted for cheap pathos, is worst of all. If rigor isn't applied to the treatment of the subject, well intentioned attempts may fail grotesquely.

This isn't just chick lit, this is bad chick lit and young adult. I' ve read a lot about this era, fiction and nonfiction, some great and some not so great, but it's perfectly passable. I am not a book snob. I was surprised that it was a top seller and written by an educated person. Every single character is a cliche. To feel sane and not alone, I had to come to these one star reviews.

A Perfectly Told Story by a Gifted Writer

Almost all of the reviews are five stars. I wondered what that was. I know what raves are all about after reading the book. This is one of the best books I have ever read. Hannah is a writer. The book isn't a fast read for me because I would go back and read the whole thing again just to enjoy the writing. Hannah's style does not try to be high literature. She doesn't write much scenery or background like many authors do. I felt like I knew her characters, like old friends, not without flaws, but perfectly developed. I added my five- star review to the others. This book is for reading. It will take you away from what you' re doing. This is the first book I have read. It will be my last.
