Book Overview

Athlete. Runner. Marathoner. Are these words you wouldn't exactly use to describe yourself? Do you consider yourself too old or too out of shape to run a marathon? But somewhere deep inside have you always admired the people who could reach down and come up with the mental and physical strength to complete such a daunting and rewarding accomplishment? It doesn't have to be somebody else crossing the finish line. You can be a marathoner. The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer is based on the highly successful marathon class offered by the University of Northern Iowa, which was featured in a Runner's World article titled Marathoning 101. The class has been offered five times over 10 years, and all but one student finished the marathon. That is approximately 200 students -- all first time marathoners and many with absolutely no running background. This book follows the same 16-week, four-day-a-week workout plan. What makes the success rate of this program so much higher than any other? The special emphasis on the psychological aspects of endurance activities. You don't have to love to run -- you don't even have to like it -- but you have to realize that you are capable of more than you have ever thought possible. One participant in the program explained it like this: I'm doing this for me -- not for others or the time clock. I just feel better when I run, plus it helps Read More chevron_right

Recommended book for first time marathoners
Book is great! Using it's program to train for my first full marathon in November. I would recommend this book to all new runners who would like to run a marathon, but are not sure if they can or novice runners like myself who would like to do the same.

   Good book and well-written
Got me to finish my first marathon, albeit with some end of the race - knee pain resulting from not enough training during the program.

   Reality
I have been a consistent runner for 15 years, but never ran in any organized race longer than 10K. It is hard for me to imagine that a non-runner would choose to run a marathon, because it was very difficult for me to make that mental leap. This book kept me focused on the fact that if you can control your mind by sputtering fears and doubts, you can achieve anything. The book taught me how to truly relax while running harder only makes things worse when it comes to distance running. I just completed my first marathon and had a fantastic time.

All you have to do is the training...
I was nervous through most of the training and didn 't know if I would be able to complete all 26 miles. I did the training by myself, I ran by myself and I finished the marathon by myself. With the help of the training schedule, advice in the book and by controlling my desires of finishing the marathon only partially, I was able to finish my first marathon in under 5 hours! I recommend it completely! Just read the training and do the book. You can finish this marathon and you can finish it strong!

   Very inspiring book
This book really inspires to run a marathon. As David says, it is not the book to improve your pace, but the book that will help you finish your first marathon. And the book delivers.

A must have for beginner runners.
Read a chapter as a week as you work through the training program and you get to read what other newbies are going through in their training at that particular point. A great little addition to your running collection.

If you want to finish a marathon..follow this book!
According to Amazon reviews, I bought this book, and I just completed the Mount Desert Island Marathon 2 days ago! This book changed my life literally! Not only did it change my perspective mentally, it trained me enough to finish a marathon that is mostly hills... which is not an easy feat. I can 't say enough about this book, so if you are serious about this journey... enjoy your training with this publication!

I ran a marathon using this book!
I can not say enough good things about this book. It provides pretty much everything you need to know as a first time marathoner, mental training and techniques, and tipscommentary from other first time marathoners. Though I trained alone, I felt like I had the authors and the other runners presented alongside me in the book. Some of the references are a little outdated since it was published in 1998, but everything that matters. I am very grateful that I found this book. It allowed me to cross a bucket item off my list when I ran the October 2021 Kansas City Marathon, and it provided me with tools to help me not only in running, but also in life in general.
