   Five-Star Text; Four-Star Kindle Edition
arguably the best translation of the Iliad is the translation of Fitzgerald. I've read at least two other versions, including Loeb, which are not bad, but are not nearly readable as Fitzgerald. The hardcopy edition of Fitzgerald is definitely a five-star text. The Kindle edition contains misprints that are not found in the hardcopy editions. Worse, Fitzgerald's real endnotes are a voluminous and informative pain to navigate. Kindle thinks that the end of the book occurs before the endnotes, making it difficult to flip between text and endnotes. The Kindle edition is certainly more convenient than paper to carry, but the poor integration of the note cards is an ongoing annoyance. Sorry, Kindle - folks, you've diminished a great work by your sloppy editing.

   Simply the Best
I had tried to read The Iliad two or three times over the last thirty years, but had always gotten bogged down in translations that just didn 't speak to me. Robert Fitzgerald's translation does not sing just speak ; it speaks. Just like with his “Odyssey ”, he captures the soul of Homer in this way, no one else has ever captured my experience.

A great story that is best enjoyed in its oral tradition
The Iliad is a foundational piece of Western literature. For centuries, it was shared orally, and I really enjoyed listening to the story in this original tradition. The narrator, Dan Stevens, is excellent. His pace and tone are well suited to the long poem style. He has a seemingly effortless command of the names of all characters and places, many of which were unfamiliar to me. The Iliad was a real pleasure to listen to.

   My Favorite Translation of Homer
Homer's translations of Fitzgerald are poetic and a pleasure to read. I can not read the original Greek, but my understanding is that the original was not just a story, but a story told in the form of a poem. That is the feel of Fitzgerald's translations.

Lots of typos!!! -- In the kindle version.
We were hiking and reading the epic at different places around lakes, mountains and... walls. I had to keep being corrected by people who had the paper version because of the typos and misprints in the kindle version. So NOT worth the paper price, which equaled a kindle version.
