The original vision of Grimms' tales in English for the first time

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, and Cinderella would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezs .

From The Frog King to The Golden Key, wondrous worlds unfold--heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions Read More chevron_right

Great Book for those who understand it
I enjoy every inch of this book. They are full of happy hints of the past that we once knew how people once looked at small endings really. I love this book ''. NOT FOR CHILDREN unless you are one of those fast-moving families. Child needs to be able to understand fake emotions and know what is real from correct way before reading it. Could cause nightmares to people who can be normal scared or sleep unease easily.

   Great read
I heard my whole life about the original Grimm stories. So glad that someone finally released the works of 1812 and 1815... and it does not disappoint.

Not necessarily for children, but more for people who want to understand more about the origin of our famous fairy tales.

   Great Investment and Wonderful Read.
Ready for my 4 sons and now grandsons many different versions of Grimm's Fairy Tales. The twelve-year-old Grandson asked about the difference between all the versions published and if there was an edition that was more faithful to the original version. Went online to search and found a couple of beautiful editions with nice colorful illustrations. The book arrived in two days and did not disappoint anyone. We were all surprised by the number of stories contained in the book. I think this is a great investment for people who are interested in Fairy Tales, especially the stories we all grew up reading to us and of course the many animated films available over these past several generations. In every respect, very high quality.

This is one of those books one should read once at least in his or her life
One always hears quotes made or references relating to Grimm folk and fairy tales, there are a reason for this, I believe. It is truly one of the best representations of such a large and diverse cross section of early folk history that has stood the test of time. The truths that are hidden therefore are a timeless lesson for all.

   Not what I was expecting
This book arrived in a perfect condition. We shipped fast and described as described. I thought the stories would be even scarier. Since I did not think they were scary at all, I read one to my 7-year-old son and out of nowhere the very last line and the kittens were killed. The look on his face is a big deal! I had to put my best mom always '' coffee mug for three weeks. ( codified '' )

Was in good condotion, just not the edition i wanted
Was hoping for the old stories before they were rewritten for the sake of the children's vulnerable ears. I do not think that this is it. If you find one, let me know.

Love the authenticity, so does my daughter
My daughter really loves them. She's six and really into the supernatural and scary, so this Grimm edition is right up her alley. There are some that I won 't read, but only a few. I also spend a lot of time explaining how things are now different and morals have changed over time. Regardless, I love teaching her to educate in historical fables.

Stark and vivid translations. Very well-made book with exceptional illustrations.
I want to point out that this book is very well-made, with a sewn binding and bright, opaque pages. Gift-qualy : Also worth pointing out are the remarkable illustrations by Andrea Dezsö, which appear to be composed from white paper cutouts on black background. Not children's reading, but almost certainly the one edition of Grimm's Tales to have.
