Book Overview

What does brain science have to do with spiritual growth?

After a lifetime following Christ and a career as a spiritual formation pastor, Michel Hendricks was disappointed: Why does spiritual transformation seem fleeting? And why do Christian communities often seem shallow? That's when he met neurotheologian Jim Wilder and discovered what's been missing from his church community and spiritual life.

The Other Half of Church invites you to join Michel and revolutionize your spiritual growth by understanding how the brain works. Learn the roles of the brain's left and right sides and how they're both critical to experience lasting, full-brain transformation. You'll then learn the four ingredients necessary to develop and maintain a vibrant, transformational community:

  • True joy found through connection and relationships
  • Hesed love of securely attached communities
  • Well-developed group identity based on the character of Christ
  • A culture of uplifting, healthy correction

   This is the missing link!
Brain science has helped us connect with Christ in a way that is not heady. 0156 2105 The author, showing how brain science is connected to our walk with Christ, in a way that is not heady. Our character formation happens with more than just sermons, it involves God's work in the lives of others. What I’ve known for a long time is that this is something I’ve been trying to figure out since I moved from being a young Christian to an adult Christian. It was a brutal transition from Christian discipleship to being on my own in a loving community, he said. The book is the missing link. The Lord has given me this book to recommend to every Christian church leader.

Wonderful book but it limits sharing capabilities
This is an amazing book that has so many good things that are worth while sharing, but there is a cap on how many times you can do that. It ruined all the excitement I had in explaining what I was learning with friends I was trying to create _ Heise with. It's great to be back home, said Blair.

This book should be required reading in every church and every family!
Trying to follow all the rules simply doesn't get us to the place we want to live. The book outlines how we can experience spiritual transformation when we start using the strongest force in the brain and stop using the weakest force in the brain. God created us in His image for joyful community and this book points us in the right direction, he said. This is the most important book I've read on the topic of spiritual growth in church communities in a long time.

The Best Corrective for the Church
If you know something is wrong with the American church in general, but don't know how to fix it, read this book. All denominations can benefit because it's not about doctrine but about the way we think and learn and do community, he said. We need to learn from the best brain science and the history of thought to correct the fact that we're not about bringing transformation, he said. The Life Model Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You, by Dr. E. James Wilder and Dr. Janet Grubb, is also available.

   Transformative
I didn't connect with the second half of the book as much, but the first half was so good, even life-changing, that I had to go with five stars. So I wanted to be honest with this review, but also don't want it to be lost that first half of the book, which has altered how I see and do community and ministry, as well as paths for my own spiritual growth and transformation, wrote Frey.

So much good information to soak in
I recently read the book The Other Half of Church by John Hein. There are so many good books out there. Michel Hendricks' writing style was to constantly sprinkle in real-life stories of how the material changes lives. This book was so fascinating that while reading it I was talking about family members and friends who happened to walk by. Some of the highlights of the talk include Michel's description of Hesed love and Hesed communities, the importance of joy, the importance of looking into another's face while speaking to them, and the material on narcissistic behavior. The relationship, as in this book, between narcissism and shame is fascinating, and I think the authors nailed an important trend in our churches regarding pastors, Hollingworth said. Worth reading for anyone interested in Christian growth. Whether you're a booklover or just plain old bookworm, this is the perfect book for your next small group study or a gift for one you love.

   Amazing book with huge implications
Michael Hendrix contributed a two-out RBI single. It is extremely well written, making it extremely easy to understand. It explains why lots of church programs fall flat and why lots of discipleship and change oriented programs don't work. Michael provides concrete steps to understand and navigate relationships in a healthy way.

One of the most important and transformative books the whole Body of Christ needs to read!
This is not just an excellent book on how to do discipleship but it is a guide in how to develop, grow and sustain healthy relationships and community within the Body of Christ, he said. It is not a list of to do's in order to mature, but rather a guidebook and companion to help us all grow relationally with God and others, he said. Thank you Jim and Michel for investing of your lives into this book - it is obviously fruit of your own hard work in growing in maturity and spirituality, Raymond said.

Wish I Knew This YEARS Ago
As someone involved in Christian ministry for over 20 years, I'm strongly motivated to see people growing in Christ-like character. It is a wonder that'spiritual growth' has remained so elusive for so many Christians for so long. I've read a lot of books, been to a lot of seminars, listened to lots of podcasts, and I'm not alone. But in this book, I have found some incredibly helpful perspectives and truths that explain where a lot of'spiritual formation' efforts fall short, and how to remedy this, Graham said. I look forward to applying these concepts to my life and ministry contexts, he said.

Must read for anyone who cares about their church!
Paul Robinson, senior pastor of Grace Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, said the book "illuminated" him about what really makes for transformative discipleship. This is just too good a deal, FTC chairman Michael Frisbie said. He must have known the right thing to do is not enough. He added that we are transformed—matured hopefully—by who we love and love us. The book is very good. This is a great book, highly recommend. It's great to be back home, said Blair.
