Book Overview

Clover's mom says it isn't safe to cross the fence that segregates their African-American side of town from the white side where Anna lives. But the two girls strike up a friendship, and get around the grown-ups' rules by sitting on top of the fence together.

With the addition of a brand-new author's note, this special edition celebrates the tenth anniversary of this classic book. As always, Woodson moves readers with her lyrical narrative, and E. B. Lewis's amazing talent shines in his gorgeous watercolor illustrations.

A definite place in the library
This book is in our household library because it has a definite bent towards cross-cultural issues. If it were a book, I would give it five stars. I only give it four because I hold the books to the highest standards. The illustrations are interesting but a bit adult focused. Kids could relate if they were less smart. The text is vague and could be more powerful in certain places, but the idea and the story are great. There is a lot of depth in a short book. The issue is not painted in a black and white way.

A very powerful story about segregation
I love seeing how children see the world, even if it's not what adults want them to see. I used this story with my students.

   Story about friendships during segregation
This is a story I love. It is a good way to show students and young kids how to be nice.

Suited for Pre K to Kindergarten
This book has great illustrations and is well written. It has a great message, but I was looking for something that was more in line with the subject of racism and segregation. This is a great book to read to young children.

   Not worth the price
A very short book is too expensive. I like the drawing. I will be returning the book for a refund.

Every child should have this in their collection
The story of kids being kids without any adult interference is a wonderful book. I remembered when I was a child, the friends I made that lived across the street. The illustration is wonderful.

   Friendship across social boundaries
Excellent book, that was the Quoted The students got the message that there was only one race and none that deserved love from a child. I gave my copy to a library and now I have another book to put it in.

Great and easy to grasp introduction to race dialogue for ...
It's a cinch to absorb race dialogue for a child. Four-year-old likes a very short story and is not sure if it is accurate.
