Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in a small town in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

Keeps you interested...but horrible way to end it
This is a good Grisham book and keeps you interested all the way through as you discover the secret past of the main character, but the ending is horrible. When reading, you get to rooting for the fellow and hoping that everything goes great, but then falls apart at the end. Not a good ending, but Grisham is known for this, isn 't he?? What do you think?

   Solid Like The Rest
Although John Grisham sticks with a pretty simple premise for most, if not all of his novels, it is pretty darn effective. It is very interesting as the story evolves where the protagonist's character is unfolding into something somewhat unexpected. Grisham provides enough details and subplots to keep the story interesting, but not overly drawn to the point where the reader is left wondering what happened? It is, however, a fairly quick read so that you can buy it.

Pleasant, thought provoking and a little mystery...
It is different, but it is good. Gives you some insight into what is behind the scenes in a large law firm. Indeed, very interesting, can't say too much without spoiling the plot line.

   Exciting
This is the first Grisham book I have ever read. The plot is a little unbelievable, but sometimes it is a really good thing to have in a book. Sometimes, I mean just reading about someone who fakes their own death. I don 't think that the ending was ever really resolved. But for me, this was part of the charm of the novel. But to see how the character comes out of everything and has planned everything definately from the start a little suspension from reality.

   Formula Writing At Its Worst
The partner is at its worst Formula Writing. Throw in a hero, the requisite bad guys, the requisite romance and bingo... another bestseller. The beginning was intriguing and I thought that Grisham would finally get it right. But the book lost steam with every page and the ending was the biggest letdown in any book I ever read. The formula writing can be fantastic...a la Grisham. But Mary Higgins Clark just doesn 't click.

Be careful with a bad partner
The story of this book is how a lawyer steals 90 million dollars from his firm, goes to Brazil to live, but he can not use his millions because he has a girlfriend in Brazil who helps him to be a free man and spend his money with his girlfriend. When you reach the end of the book, you will say that it has to be this way, but in the middle of the book you will never expect this end.

Excellent Story shame about the ending
Very entertaining, it was fun to see how Patrick Lanighan planned ahead and got away with his prize. Nevertheless, the ending does not make any sense whatsoever. Not because it was logical, but because the author did not give any background to make this kind of ending sad. I understand that you have to add an unexpected twist, but this ending is almost an insult to the reader. The Brazilian lawyer could have run from the beginning with a whole lot of money, and even if she did not want to be after her, she still had the money to enjoy with the man she assumed and near her father in her home town. A great end to a disappointing book.

   Another twister at the end.
I am not a big John Grisham fan, but I must admit, if I have something to read and I am having trouble, I will eventually move to the Grisham section. In my view, this book was spellbinding from beginning to end. Then the end was completely taken by surprise. I can usually see the endings coming, but not this time. I read about 10 of Mister Grisham's novels, but this one really took me by surprise over and over again.

Loved it! John Grisham is an amazing auther
She loved it! An extraordinary auther is John Grisham. The girl was not disappointed. I caught him on my toes. However, it arrived quickly.
