My least favorite Ann Patchett book.
The protagonist has an offbeat personality that marches to the beat of a different drummer. Her steadfast resolve to chart her own course, based on a confusing array of emotions with no regard for her loved ones, does not engender sympathy. She gets away with this because she is so pretty and formidable forces to believe that her loved ones are each pretty dysfunctional. There is almost this feeling that they worship the haughty, cold woman who shows no interest in them. What the odds are that this family group could assemble by chance and have such matched neuroses.

Where is the rest of the story?
Everyone seems to be real - all are part saints and part sinners. When I finished the last chapter, which I did not know was the last chapter, I tapped the bottom right of my iPad screen to go to the next page. I could not believe it ended as it did. It was as though the game was at the top of the eighth and no players took the field and no one was at the beat.

   A wonderful story
The main characters were drawn finely. But I was concerned about her and was sad to not hear her voice again. Cecilia and Son came alive for me. Their bond is completely authentic. For them, life would go on and they would be fine. The weaving of Son's history was integral to his character, done masterfully. The genuineness of the people, never locking doors, not ravaging the hotel, as it sat dormant. All of this is crucial to the story.

   Ann Patchet never disappoints
I can not think of another author who can create a world, as does Ms. Patchet. Although the ending may not always be the proverbial happy ending, the reader is left feeling like the story could not have ended in another way, nor could it have ended any better. I am in the process of catching up on all of this author's works and reading one every time I read it I am again impressed by her extraordinary gift.

   Great storytelling!
The story is a little different and set in the Mid-West, which I don 't know well, so that was interesting. The ending though petered out. I've always expected it and it was a natural conclusion of the story but still disappointing. I won 't spoil the story for those who have not yet read it, but there is a central lie involved that is central to the plot and remains partially covered at the end! That is, one of the main characters does not know this secret. That may be how it happens in real life, but in stories you've come to expect to have things blown up. And here it did not.

   A Beautiful Story
A Beautiful Story : I loved this book. From start to finish, it was a great read. The characters were complex, human and I cared about them all. This will touch your heart and leave you wondering about life and the chosen paths.

   Loved it
I am glad that I haven 't put too much stock in these negative reviews. I loved this book ''. I am not sure what people expect when they are disappointed in an ending... a book has to end. You see these characters grow up and then each of them finally does what they need to do in order to survivecope. If you crave character over the plot, this is your book.

   Much ado about nothing
Bel Canto omg, so great! For me, this, the patron saint of Liars, was a big zero, zip, empty, nada, nothing. The story moved on and on and on... the characters were devoid of much personality and development. I continued to read in the hope that it would eventually engage me. However, it never worked out. I experienced nothing else after reading this boring story besides the disappointment that I hadn 't quit it earlier. What I can not figure out is how it has received so many accolades and high reviews?

   Beautiful and soul crushing.
A truly beautiful novel that will be on my mind for a very long time. The characters are incredibly elegantly drawn, apartably well written.

   Book Club Selection
If this was not a book club selection, I would have put it half way through the story. I like Rose's writing and style, but the story and Ann's indifference to her husband was bad enough, but her lack of love for her daughter was appalling. What I really disliked was the fact that Cecille was 15 years old, and looked very much like Mr. Clinton and nothing like her parents. When Son asked her to lie about her age, she should have put two and two together. Nothing like the Dutch house, which I loved absolutely!
