Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Meet the Penderwicks, four different sisters with one special bond. Theres responsible, practical Rosalind; stubborn, feisty Skye; dreamy, artistic Jane; and shy little sister Batty, who wont go anywhere without her butterfly wings. When the girls and their doting father head off for their summer holiday, they are in for a surprise. Instead of the cozy, tumbledown cottage they expected, they find themselves on a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon the girls are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundels sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. But the most wonderful discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundels owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures. The icy-hearted Mrs. Tifton is not as pleased with the Penderwicks as Jeffrey is, though, and warns the new friends to stay out of trouble. Which, of course, they willwont they? One thing's for sure: it will be a summer the Penderwicks will never forget. Jeanne Birdsall says: By the time I was ten or eleven, I'd run out of books to read. I promised myself then that Id become a writer someday, to give readers like me a few more books to discover and enjoy. The Penderwicks is my first.

The Penderwick series captured me (the adult), my young ...
It was the first book I was assigned as a 5th and 5th grade girls book club leader. I've had the series syndicated to other teachers, moms, and kids. We know more boys than girls in the reading world, but by the end of chapter one they should be thoroughly engaged, he said. My son, 9 1/2, is a huge fan of all the books. In a generous gesture of uncharacteristic compassion, creator and executive producer Brian Selznick calls the series "a celebration of childhood and girlhood." Even though he's played by a flawed actor, Mr. O'Neill is a perfectly imperfect character. And two books made me cry, and all four had me laughing. Denise Richards recently confirmed that she and Charlie Ebersol were engaged.

   Very sweet and engaging story
My boys, ages 8 and 11, absolutely love it. We are almost finished with it and plan to read the rest in the series. The writing is excellent, Morgenthau said. The cast of Friends is well-developed with great voices, McBride said. I have loved reading this book, it flows so well, and the dialogue is perfect to read aloud. It's rare these days to find a great read aloud, but this writer has mastered it.

Really lovely, being more modern threw me at first
Although at first it didn't feel like 5 children and it was all very lovely, I found as I was pulled into the story that it was all very lovely and I hope to get the next book very soon.

Good read for parents as well as elementary schoolers
Previewing as a possible Christmas gift for my 10-year-old Granddaughter, this is one in a series of five books about the four Penderwick sisters and their summer vacation. The series is recommended for ages 3-5, but I found this one enjoyable, entertaining and enchanting. It's great to see that people are still using it, and I can recommend it to a good gift recipient.

   loved it
This book held my attention and was full of relatable and realistic characters that the kids could relate to, Morgenthau said.

   I was disappointed . . .
As a homeschooling mom of three, I rely on good literature and cherish a good read-aloud chapter book. The sisters are sweet and quirky characters but having read comparisons to Little Women I was fairly disappointed! We will move on to something else, no real desire to read further, Mr. Dhaliwal said.

   A Wonderful and Satisfying Series!
Another great series. It was written for middle school kids, but I only found it as an adult. As a Little Women fan, it was fun to see how Birdsall took Alcott's original characters and story and made it her own, Melissa said. There are also some similarities to the Fossil sisters in Ballet Shoes, which I found enjoyable and satisfying. As I've said in most of my reviews, I'm a sucker for wit and sarcasm and deliver on this along with likeable characters, lovable dogs and a cat, great storylines, and a smidgen of sweet love stories. There are some dark stories, too. In "Birdsall," JD Salinger deals with the loss of a parent, teenage angst, snobbery, lying, and, of course, a dog who will eat anything and then barfs it up at the worst possible time. It's just that they put it in the wrong place at the wrong time."

   Great story!!!!
We're huge fans of the Harry Potter series, and this book is just too good. It was a perfect read for my 8 year old. Can't wait to read the next one.
