Two practing poets share guidance and inspiration
Normally, I'm suspicious about writing poetry. The creation of a poem is such a personal and private affair that I tend to despair of long distance help. Happily, The Poet's companion strikes such a balance between inspiration and craft that it is the next best thing to actively participate in an outstanding workshop. I benefited from the poetic themes and supported exercises, feeling creatively rejuvenated by the authors'challenges. It seems to have no poetic axes to grind ; its only goal is to advance the ideological impulse from the brain to the page. I am truly grateful to have this book, as it has helped me in a personal liberation from a massive case of the writer's block. I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read poetry and learn the techniques of writing poetry.

   Best Guide There Is
I was looking for a practical introduction to writing poetry that did not involve dream journals and finger paints, but actually had a flinty professional eye toward what makes a poem work-how to write the kind of poem that appears in literary magazines. This has everything you ever need, discussions of meter and form and experimentation and other bits of craft, plus a lot of clear examples from really good contemporary poems. You will not find it better.

   Well balanced and helpful
They offer excellent examples and offer exercises -- these are a bit too much unless one is just beginning writing poetry as might be the case of a college student (although a college student will probably be asked much more pedantic books ). I enjoyed reading this book, learning a few things I sort of knew once. I recommend this book to others.

   poet's companion
Some parts of the book were helpful, but on the whole, I should have saved my purchase price and went to the Public Library for help.

   Wonderful resource
I had been looking for a book on poetry that focused less on form and structure and more on the writing of poetry as personal expression... and in this book I actually got both. I learned about different forms of poetry as well as how to use life experiences as a foundation for my work.

   Not the best
College course purchased for a college class. It's okay, but I would say buy poetry videos and read them just.

   Expert Mentoring by Expert Writers.
“The Poet's Companion ” is an insightful, well-written how-to primer for those who are serious about their writing. The chapters on Simile and Metaphor and A Grammatical Excursion are particularly helpful for those who want to add power, meaning and originality to their poetry. Self-Daubt and the writer's block chapters expertly address the challenge of the writer's distrust of their ability and apprehension in getting started.

Received brand new book in perfect condition for less than ten dollars
Received new brand book in perfect condition for under ten dollars ''. I needed this different book for a creative writing course and I enjoy the exercises within the exact sections. They are very thought provoking and creativity stimulating and would be an excellent inspiration for any poetic or even descriptive writer. Moreover, I find the author's writing style amazingly easy to read. It is boring, easy to follow, and not simple and straightforward, as some other texts are. The tone is always inspirational, honestly providing tips and writing encouragement. This is a beautiful positive twist and delightful different perspective for aspiring writers, and though it sounds to be directed at amateurs, I think that any author who may experience writer's block at times could find this useful and full of insight to try out fresh perspectives to pen about topics that can be applied to a broad range of subjects. Quality : informative and yet uplifting text on poetic writing!
