Now with a new afterword by Pope emeritus Benedict XVI
In a time when there is more and more noise, and technology and materialism continue to exert their hold on us, Cardinal Robert Sarah presents a bold book about the strength of silence. The world generates so much noise that seeking moments of silence only becomes more necessary. For Cardinal Sarah, modern man, in repressing the divine, finds himself in a deep dilemma, an oppressive and anguishing trial. The Cardinal recalls that life is a silent relationship between what is most intimate in man and God. Silence is indispensable for hearing the music of God: prayer arises from silence and returns to silence with ever greater depth.
In this long and profound conversation with Nicolas Diat, done within the hallowed walls of silence in the famous Carthusian monastery of La Grande Chartreux in France, the Cardinal proposes the question: can those who do not know silence ever attain truth, beauty, love? The response is undeniable: all that is great and creative is formed by silence. God is silence.
After the great international success of God or Nothing, translated into fourteen languages, Cardinal Sarah seeks to restore to silence its place of honor and importance. Although speech characterizes man, silence is what defines him, because speech acquires sense Read More chevron_right

Read This after Reading The Benedict Option

The premise of Cardinal is that our contemporary world is so full of noise that our own minds and souls are filled with it. We then spread the noise to the church, where it most certainly does not belong. The church in its liturgy and ancient practices forgets the other practice of standing in prayer, adoration and lectio divina. It converges into noise and forgets that God keeps silence himself. Sarah encourages the reader to feel the ancient, monastic urge to withdraw to the desert to hear the voice of God, which can be heard only when we keep silence. This is following Jesus Christ's example, and is a protest against the dictatorship of noise in this world we inhabit, along with the Benedict Option. Sarah's book provides a clear path for Christians to resist the noise of this fake and hostile.

Hurrah for Sarah!
Derived From Web , Jul 5, 2017
Still working through this book, Necessary and Most Wonderful. Many of my friends have this as well and we all agree that Cardinal Sarah nailed the Ache, Hunger, Deep Longing palpably within our hearts, and the remedy for the soul's disease in this world of chaos and noise - silence. Not just Quiet, although that is a helpful start, but the Holy Silence that draws one into His Most Holy Presence. Cultivating with God in Silence, being that Cave of the Heart! The cave where Elijah waited, the Cave of Bethlehem, the Cave holding the body of Jesus awaiting the resurrection, teaches us to not be afraid of the dark, for He is present. Like many other holy books, I found reading this before the Blessed Sacrament the best place to BE with Him all the time while he is with me.
