Book Overview

When change requires you to challenge people's familiar reality, it can be difficult, dangerous work. Whatever the context--whether in the private or the public sector--many will feel threatened as you push though major changes. But as a leader, you need to find a way to make it work.

Ron Heifetz first defined this problem with his distinctive theory of adaptive leadership in Leadership Without Easy Answers. In a second book, Leadership on the Line, Heifetz and coauthor Marty Linsky highlighted the individual and organizational dangers of leading through deep change in business, politics, and community life. Now, Heifetz, Linsky, and coauthor Alexander Grashow are taking the next step: The Practice of Adaptive Leadership is a hands-on, practical guide containing stories, tools, diagrams, cases, and worksheets to help you develop your skills as an adaptive leader, able to take people outside their comfort zones and assess and address the toughest challenges.

The authors have decades of experience helping people and organizations create cultures of adaptive leadership. In today's rapidly changing world, The Practice of Adaptive Leadership can be your handbook to meeting the demands of leadership in the midst of complexity.

Experiment with Leadership by reading Adaptive Leadership. It's a ...
Adaptable Leadership: The Science of Experimentation by John Heine. It's a necessary read if you are serious about your practising of leadership and your role as a leader, he said. I have a hard copy and use it for reference.

The leadership book for all professions
Its the subject, not the book, that really helps me get my Educator Nurses head around leadership and leadership challenges, said Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the University of Michigan's Center for Nursing Excellence.

   Just what i needed.
It arrived as described and was in time for my spring semester. However, the price was definitely worth it considering that it is a used product.

   Absolutely essential
Deep, well-organized and accessible, Adaptive Leadership will move both you and your organization forward. This is not “pop leadership” like Brendon Burchard, Richard Sheridan or even John Maxwell would have us believe. If you are looking for cheap seats and pre-fab BS then stay away. If you are ready to embrace experimentation, ambiguity, deep values and personal and organizational resistance, then get on board. One of the great leadership books ever written. A true ethos and a way of being and maps to get there are what you'll find here.

   Best book on leadership
From practitioners who provide not only the what and why, but also the HOW. My go to reference book is always a reference book, no matter how difficult the task.

Worth adding to your leadership library
By drawing a distinction between an adaptive versus a technical challenge, the authors help me step back and be more conscious of my thoughts and attitudes. This book is very good. One observation, at times the authors seemed a bit pessimistic in their assessments of leadership challenges and options, but regained a noble vision for leadership overall.

   Inspiring
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn leadership. It says that leadership is not perfect, but that you must practice it. He also says that as a leader you must take care of yourself.
