Book Overview

Farnsworth beautifully integrates his own observations with scores of quotations from Epictetus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Montaigne and others. This isn't just a book to read--it's a book to return to, a book that will provide perspective and consolation at times of heartbreak or calamity.--The Washington Post

See more clearly, live more wisely, and bear the burdens of this life with greater ease--here are the greatest insights of the Stoics, in their own words. Presented in twelve lessons, Ward Farnsworth systematically presents the heart of Stoic philosophy accompanied by commentary that is clear and concise.

A foundational idea to Stoicism is that we appear to go through life reacting directly to events. That appearance is an illusion. We react to our judgments and opinions--to our thoughts about things, not to things themselves. Stoics seek to become conscious of those judgments, to find the irrationality in them, and to choose them more carefully.

In chapters including Emotion, Adversity, Virtue, and What Others Think, here is the most valuable wisdom about living a good life from ages past--now made available for our time.

   The perfect book on stoicism
The book is the culmination of wisdom culled from the great philosophers. The book is a powerful indictment of the American justice system.

   Best book on stoicism
I listen to the audiobook in the car and use the printed copy for daily review.

   Great
The Stoics' work ethic was recognized by the ancient world's first philosophers, Paul and Athena. I intend to look back on this book in the future, if and when I experience trouble, he said.

   Not bad, I guess...
It is not events that cause us grief, but rather, our interpretation of those events that cause us grief. We're all going to die anyways, so what does it matter? In a generous gesture of uncharacteristic compassion, I reduced the book to half its original size. He also brings to our attention the idea of "preferred indifferences," or at least the notion that this may sound like a paradox. However, he gives no clear explanation as to why it is not a paradox. I will admit that the author did his work writing this book considering all the references to the stoic philosophers. Note the star rating: 35.

   practicing Stoic
I like a larger book even if it has to have less pages, because the content is good and the writing is well-explained. Had they used the same technique, Mr. Rule told the judge. The other two witnesses gave an acceptable account of the incident, the second witness said.

   Great introduction to Stoicism
In this easy to read and enlightening introduction to the philosophy of the porch, Ward Farnsworth synthesizes many of the teachings of ancient Stoics.

   Very well organized
Even today, many of the concepts remain relevant.

   The best of the best!
There are many good resources on the market today to supplement the original works of CS Lewis. I would argue that The Practicing Stoic from Ward Farnsworth would be the equivalent of the Bible for Stoic philosophy. The book is organized in such a way that you can read it cover to cover, pick and choose the chapter topics that interest you most. However, the references and cross-references are not only from the Stoics, but also from other resources. This is the most definitive book on Stoicism I have found to date. Whether a newcomer to Stoic philosophy or a seasoned practictioner of Stoic doctrine, there's something for everyone in this impeccably organized book and will be THE source of reference not only for your applications of Stoicism in your life, but a handbook to aid you in nearly every situation you will encounter.

   Wonderful Single Resource
There are a lot of good works for the modern Stoic, but I believe this is perhaps the best. Rather, Farnsworth has created a modern Enchiridion, but drawn from many sources—both ancient and modern—and sorted things thematically for easy access.
