Book Overview

The Premed Playbook: Guide to the Medical School Personal Statement helps guide students in crafting their stories for the medical school Admission Committees. It's not only a collection of essays from students who got into top schools, but is a showcase of essays that started badly and were honed to tell great stories. Ryan Gray, MD shares the stories of students who likely didn't have a shot, but ultimately succeed, in part because of the advice laid out in The Premed Playbook: Guide to the Medical School Personal Statement. They had to fight their way into medical school--and told a great story to do it.

   Great advice
Though I have a back ground as a writer, he gave me new insights that I had not previously considered. She said the faculty had specifically mentioned her essay and how her story had stuck with them. I then applied that advice to my own admissions essays and have received 7 interview invites and four admissions offers so far, and more than one interviewer has mentioned my personal statement as an exemplar. If you are applying to graduate programs in health, not just medicine, read this book! Great advice, said Dr. Michael Hambro, "and I highly recommend it."

   Minimally Helpful & Poorly Organized
Like the interview book that I read of him, these are poorly organized and redundant. You could watch a couple of his 20 minute videos and save money, too. Very minimal assistance. I was admitted to a number of programs and it wasn't these books that I felt like helped me as much as professors at my undergrad program, she said.

My advisor said my Personal Statement was one of the best she had ever read
In "Admissions to Medical School: The Dossier's Guide to Applying," he shares some of the common mistakes that medical students make in the admissions process. Dr. Gray's honesty and integrity helped me to put pen to paper, and I greatly relieved my anxiety about writing. Thanks to Dr. Gray's advice, I was able to write something that I am proud of, which clearly communicates who I am and why I want to be a physician. In her opinion, Richardson said, "my personal statement was one of the best she had ever read."

Helpful and a huge money saver!
Thanks for the book. Only a critical review by Dr. Goin would have changed anything. The edited versions of the book were not all that helpful, Mr. Rule told the judge. Nevertheless, it was very helpful to read Dr. Gray's opinions and critiques of so many personal statements. This book saved me the thousands of dollars I would have spent on editing services, so I am very thankful and highly recommend it!

   Must read for premeds!
It was a struggle to come up with a personal statement, much less a business statement. I had written a draft, but it was too early to say whether I would recommend it to others. I found this book helpful because it helped me hone in on what I really wanted to show admissions officers.

A must read for any pre-med
I am currently a rising junior and this book has been a great help to prepare me for writing my personal statement, he said. Dr. Gray does a great job in conveying all the necessary information for creating a good personal statement, Bruno said.

   Don't Pass On This Book
I can't recommend this book highly enough. I had attended various personal statement meetings with my pre-med program and have looked at other resources before coming across this book, he said. He helped me see how I needed to SHOW ads rather than tell them in my personal statement. A tremendous value for what you get, Mr. Dhaliwal said.

If you want to get into med school...
If you want to get into med school, this book is for you. Dr. Ryan Gray, who has helped students matriculate, is very knowledgeable about the admissions process. He offers great advice and samples of personal statements that are great, and others that are not so great, with his personal feedback on how to improve. This is a great place to start if you don't know what to write about, or a great read to try and improve the statement you have now.

Imperative for students writing their personal statement.
As a pre-health advisor who is not a physician, I rely on outside sources, people, books, podcasts, etc. I want to learn how to best help my students, he said. I have found that book to be a great personal statement. If you are a student looking to get into medical school, this is a great return on investment.
