The New York Times bestselling author of George Washington's Secret Six and Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates turns to two other heroes of the nation: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
In The President and the Freedom Fighter, Brian Kilmeade tells the little-known story of how two American heroes moved from strong disagreement to friendship, and in the process changed the entire course of history. Abraham Lincoln was White, born impoverished on a frontier farm. Frederick Douglass was Black, a child of slavery who had risked his life escaping to freedom in the North. Neither man had a formal education, and neither had had an easy path to influence. No one would have expected them to become friends--or to transform the country. But Lincoln and Douglass believed in their nation's greatness. They were determined to make the grand democratic experiment live up to its ideals. Lincoln's problem: he knew it was time for slavery to go, but how fast could the country change without being torn apart? And would it be possible to get rid of slavery while keeping America's Constitution intact? Douglass said no, that the Constitution was irredeemably corrupted by slavery--and he wanted Lincoln to move Read More chevron_right

I'm not a huge fan of Gillian Flynn's books, but I enjoyed the book. Very busy, had very little time to read. When I tried to pick it up again, I got an error that I no longer have access to this content, and would have to purchase it again. Amazon has said it will review rental policies for both fiction and non-fiction books.

freedom fighters
Derived From Web , Dec 3, 2021
I've enjoyed reading this book, which is well written and gives a real insight into the civil war and its problems. I think most of us have a vested interest in determining the greatness of Douglas Fredrick in his role of peace maker, at a time when peace was very fragile, said Dr. Abraham Lincoln. The original statue had shown the two Confederate leaders standing, but the new one shows only one. It does little to show the “freedom†so hard fought for by the Vietcong, he said. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially those. who are ignorant of the true reason for the war and the reason we are still so at odds with the issue of education and social standing, Raymond said. I am certain that there are many Americans for Black Americans who are proud to have risen in the ranks of America. We have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, he said.

Well researched, documented and very well written

Very informative and imminently readable, Paul D. Crane said of the book. It was well researched, well documented and written in a way that made it come to life, he said. I learned things about both men and the events that shaped them despite having read several previous books on the subject. Through his book, Lincoln makes clear his will to preserve the American way of life, and to help her to live up to her founding principles.

an honest appraisal

This book is moving, and I found it to be a decent account of the relationship of these two masters of the English language. It inspires me to learn more about both men.

Well fomented history of one of America’s most significant periods
Derived From Web , Nov 6, 2021
This book is an excellent introduction to two crucial personalities of American history: President Lincoln who held the country together during the Civil War and Frederick Douglass, a former slave, educated in many ways the American people about the evils of slavery. Very good work, said Pauley, assistant professor at George Washington University. Note: If you have any questions, please contact Amazon. com.
