Book Overview

This Description may be from another edition of this product.

Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that marriage does not mean 'til death do us part, but merely for as long as my needs are being met; and that when serious differences arise, divorce is the best solution.

According to the Bible, all of these modern-day assumptions miss what marriage is all about. In The Meaning of Marriage--a six-session video-based Bible study--Timothy Keller, along with Kathy, his wife of forty years, draws a profound portrait of marriage from the pages of Scripture that neither idealizes nor rejects the institution but points us back to the relationship between God and man. The result is a vision for marriage that is refreshingly frank and unsentimental, yet hopeful and beautiful.

This six-session video Bible study is for anyone from singles to couples considering marriage to those who have been married recently or for a long time.

Sessions include:

  1. Service: Marriage Isn't about You (24:00)
  2. Covenant: Created to Make Promises (20:00)
  3. Roles: Loving through Mutual Submission (25:00)
  4. Singleness: Strengthening the Spiritual Family (23:00)
  5. Sex: The Act of Covenant Renewal (20:00)
  6. Hope: Seeing the Great Horizon (23:00)

Pack contains one study guide and one DVD.

   Highly Recommend!
We did not read the book but the questions in the discussion guide are great for stimulating focused conversations. Some of the people in the Biblestudy group are different from each other. One member had never been in an open discussion based study, so the questions like this encouraged her to look at her own scriptures in a different way. The open discussion atmosphere helped a new Christian feel more confident in her ability to contribute to the conversation. The scripture and Keller's explanation is so simple that my co- leader and I were more like conversation facilitations. I was able to find the videos on Vimeo for less than 20 dollars. The story of the younger and elder brothers is God's message to all of his children, so I would suggest this to any group of any age.

Great resource: well organized and easy to lead
I almost didn't use the study because of some reviews I read on Amazon. I am very happy I did. This is one of the best lead studies I' ve had in 14 years. It is profound in content. Well organized. It's easy to lead with little to no prep work required and it's not overly simplistic which is so often the case when something is easier to lead. The study has generated a deep and thought provoking discussion in the group. I'm very pleased. The discussion guide isn't essential for the study, but the appendices at the back of idols are helpful. It was beneficial to take things from the general to specific and make them personally applicable because of the guide. I recommend ' The Prodigal God'.

Very Valuable Insights and Very Interesting Format
These sessions were very enjoyable. In some sessions, there is a non- Christian couple present. This makes for a very interesting dynamic as the meaning of marriage is put forth in a way that is respectful and compelling. Keller is gifted at building bridges from non- belief to belief in ways that are compelling and respectful, but without endangering or compromising the faith. I wanted to get this DVD into the hands of some of my non- Christian friends or better yet invite them to study with me and my wife. This book and the DVD sessions challenge both Christians and non- Christians with the truth of the Gospel and its ramifications on the meaning of marriage.

   Great study.
The church found the study to be beneficial. The videos that accompany the study are basically one main sermon on session 1 with six 3-4 minute reviews of the first session, and hopefully, everyone knows that. This made our group hesitant at first because we like a good 20 minute video and discussion but this discussion guide is good and has good questions if people keep up with the reading. I highly recommend it.

   Recommend for Book Group Discussion
The book group was doing something. The discussion guide was great for discussing this book. If you' re doing that, I would recommend it.

   Produces growth
Timothy Keller has many excellent works. The older brother's insights are changing his life. The last two chapters are not part of a larger book. In order to apply and grow, Pastor Keller may not have been able to clarify things you know you believe in. He includes context outside the christian world, out into the broader marketplace of beliefs, which helps to make distinctions between Biblical and worldly living.
