Book Overview
THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELER
A powerful, vibrantly illustrated story about the first day of school--and two sisters on one's first day of hijab--by Olympic medalist and social justice activist Ibtihaj Muhammad.
With her new backpack and light-up shoes, Faizah knows the first day of school is going to be special. It's the start of a brand new year and, best of all, it's her older sister Asiya's first day of hijab--a hijab of beautiful blue fabric, like the ocean waving to the sky. But not everyone sees hijab as beautiful, and in the face of hurtful, confusing words, Faizah will find new ways to be strong.

Teaches that hijabs aren't a negative thing
Derived From Web , Feb 2, 2021
I've lived in Minnesota my whole life, and I've seen hijabs around, but I didn't really pay attention to them because I didn't know what significance they had. I'm used to seeing them, so I'm comfortable talking about where they got them. I know that not everyone is used to either of those things, and the fact that hijabs are different from what they're used to can be scary to some people. This book is a great way to show the Hijab as a positive thing and to teach kids not to let the judgement and meanness of others hold them down or back.

Love this book
Derived From Web , Jul 26, 2020
The book sent a message and I enjoyed it. My daughter is in 2nd grade and I think it's a good level to read at. It doesn't feel like a baby book, but it is short enough for her to read on her own. My kids go to a very diverse school and I thought this would be a good book about diversity. I was very pleased with it. The idea of teasing and not being accepted, as well as the idea of curiosity, were introduced by the author without making them the center of the book. It was really well done.

Good for non-hijab families, too.
Derived From Web , Jun 25, 2020
The younger daughter is watching her sister wear a hijab for the first time. Cute artwork and beautiful colors. I got this book because it was the first picture book I had ever seen where a girl in a hijab was not about religion. When I read this with my older child, I liked the letter at the end from the author.

Really beautiful book
Derived From Web , Jun 24, 2020
The book is exceptional. It was great to see a girl wearing a hijab being the main character. My white 6 year old daughter asked a lot of questions about Islam and we had a great conversation about the character who was bullied for her hijab. She looked at the picture of the two princesses wearing hijabs on her own. This is a request at night time. Great story, great pictures, great message.

POWERFUL
Derived From Web , Dec 23, 2019
I liked the cover of this book very much. Hatem Aly's work is very good. This is a powerful story for both children and adults, and is relevant in today's times. It would make a great read for a small group of children. Afterwards, it could be used to inspire discussion. One of my favorite lines in a picture book is one that I will not give away. Highly recommend this book.

Beautiful Story
Derived From Web , Nov 24, 2019
I always look for multicultural books in my classroom, and this book is one of them. This isn't just a story about Islam or hijab, but about siblings, family, school and life. My students found it very real. It's well written and the illustrations are gorgeous.

Beautiful book!
Derived From Web , Nov 22, 2019
The book was done well. It gives those of us who are not Muslim a chance to teach our children about the culture and how to respect those who wear the hijab. The illustrations are beautiful and well written to show that hijab is a choice that is steeped in tradition and that women who follow have a lot to offer. My daughter asked a lot of questions. This is a great way for us to understand that other cultures are deserving of respect. This is a great book for non- Muslim families who want to start talking to their kids about the world, even if they don't live in a city.

Beautiful story with such lovely artwork
Derived From Web , Nov 3, 2019
This is a lovely story about inner strength and the love of family, and how you can hold your head high even when others try to take it down. Even if one does not wear a hijab, the first day of school can be difficult, and this story addresses that. I am not a Muslim or of color, but knowing that this book is out in the world makes me happy for those who are. The artwork fits the story nicely. Every girl who needs to see her representation in such a sweet way should have this book in every library.

Wonderful book about family, culture, and acceptance.
Derived From Web , Oct 21, 2019
My wife and I are both very fond of this book. We think it's important to teach diversity at a young age so we're going to read this to our baby and put it in the rotation as he grows. The importance of family, culture, and acceptance is explained in this story. The writing is simple and the pictures are beautiful. I would give more than 5 stars if I could.

A touching story about courage to honor your faith.
Derived From Web , Oct 17, 2019
I had friends who taught me about their faith, even though I am not a Muslim. I chose to read this story because I wanted my daughter to know that. It was more than just an informational book about the Islamic faith. I found many similarities between my faith and the young girls in the story I think that every school and local library should have this book and have it read to groups of children. The girls in this story seem to posses a lot of courage and grace.
