Book Overview

Discover practical strategies to make reading aloud a meaningful family ritual.

The stories we read--and the conversations we have about them--help shape family traditions, create lifelong memories, and become part of our legacy. Reading aloud not only has the power to change a family--it has the power to change the world.

But we all know that connecting deeply with our families can be difficult in our busy, technology-driven society. Reading aloud is one of the best ways to be fully present with our children, even after they can read themselves, but it isn't always easy to do. Discover how to:

  • Prepare your kids for academic success through reading to them
  • Develop empathy and compassion in your kids through books
  • Find time to read aloud in the midst of school, sports, and dinner dishes
  • Choose books across a variety of sibling interests and ages
  • Make reading aloud the best part of your family's day

The Read-Aloud Family also offers age-appropriate book lists from infancy through adolescence. From a toddler's wonder to a teenager's resistance, you will find the inspiration you need to start a read-aloud movement in your own home.

   Not secular
I could not find it in the description that is a faith-based book. It is a book of faith very heavily. Then I came back.

   Wonderful Book
I could read her work all day long and listen to her work. This is a lifelong book for any parent who wants to create helpful readers. She gives book recommendations for various ages and tips for how to pick out high quality books for your children as well as how to talk to them about the books they have read.

I know it for years, but sometimes I forget how incredibly valuable it is. This book gave me the reminder I needed and the permission I craved to dive further. Research shows the innumerable good that you can do for your children simply by reading to them. This book sets your heart on fire, stirs up your brain cells, sets you free of guilt and second guessing, and is delicious in and of itself! Plus, an incredible book list at the back. The best $10 spent ever! #readaloudrevival #vival

Reading is very important to me and I try to cultivate a love of books in my kids
I ordered this book in January and couldn t wait for it to come. Reading is very important to me and I try to instill in my children a love of books. It gives you that comforting mom to mom connection about how to make aloud time in your family. It also has lots of encouraging words to help you build your family culture around books, as the author says in her podcast! I categorized the book lists in the back with tons of recommendations for books to read with your family, especially by age. The only issue I had with this book was not mentioned in the description that it would be religious at all and we are not a religious family. The religious aspects of the book weren’t too heavy and I usually skipped these paragraphs so that it was a great purchase in the end.

I have been reading aloud to my children for years. But Sarah's book was like chatting with a friend for a cup of coffee and chatting. Each day I couldn t return to the book or wait for it to return. I gained so much insight through the scientific data of the proven intellectually, academically and emotionally of reading aloud with your kids. Sarah also offers practical tips that make this practice doable - that even 5 minutes make a difference and that even when you read aloud times are chaotic, it still makes an impact on your children. The book is worth the purchase if only for the amazingly thorough and organized book lists at the back of the book to get you started in your read aloud adventure. And today, read to your children.

I love the podcast, but the book is even better!
I have been listening to the podcast Read Aloud Revival for a few years now and I still get excited when a new episode comes out! Sarah Mackenzie has the best taste in books and has really inspired me to make reading aloud time a part of our family culture! Needless to say, I was thrilled to hear that she is writing this book! Some of the material is covered on podcast episodes, but I love having everything in one place for easy reference. Moreover, she delves here in the book into much of the information in more detail. I especially love the tips for creating a book club culture at home, becoming a literary matchmaker for your child and asking compelling questions about books. I learned so much! But the very best part of the book is Sarah's extensive book list, organized by age. I see lots of new titles that I can 't wait to read aloud to my family!

   New Book Encouraging Reading Aloud
When my children were younger, a primary resource for reading aloud and providing suggested titles was Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook. Trelease's book praises Mackenzie's book, as she reinforces the importance of reading aloud to children, but also gives practical tips for doing so. In addition to helpful book lists by age group, she also gives suggestions for activities that children can do with their hands while reading and open ended questions one can use to encourage conversations with children about books that have been read to them.
