Book Overview
What's Happening to Grandpa meets Up in this tender, sensitive picture book that gently explains the memory loss associated with aging and diseases such as Alzheimer's.
James's Grandpa has the best balloons because he has the best memories. He has balloons showing Dad when he was young and Grandma when they were married. Grandpa has balloons about camping and Aunt Nelle's poor cow. Grandpa also has a silver balloon filled with the memory of a fishing trip he and James took together. But when Grandpa's balloons begin to float away, James is heartbroken. No matter how hard he runs, James can't catch them. One day, Grandpa lets go of the silver balloon--and he doesn't even notice Grandpa no longer has balloons of his own. But James has many more than before. It's up to him to share those balloons, one by one.- This item: The Remember Balloons$7.58

So touching!
Derived From Web , Oct 22, 2021
This book is so touching and it was the perfect book to read to my children when their great-grandfather's health was declining. The text and illustrations provide the perfect explanation for young people to understand and the colorful balloons help to lift the mood and seriousness of the story.

Absolutely perfect!
Derived From Web , Jul 1, 2021
It focuses on the complex topic of an aging parent, or great-parent, in an age appropriate way. The idea of memories as balloons made it easy for my daughters to understand and the decline of someone's memories as balloons slipping away was just perfect. My mom has Alzheimer's, and although this does not mention Alzheimer's specifically, it has helped me explain the disease to my daughters. I could not love this book more - it's a gem!

Beautiful and well written!
Derived From Web , Feb 6, 2021
It is great for children who have grandparents dealing with memory loss, but in general it is perfect for talking about memories. It is so sweet and shows so much love through it. I have come across many books that have a similar premise and this is by far the best. I have a high standard for books and which ones I like to own - this is now a favorite on my bookshelf. I teared reading through it both my husband. It is such a well written book.

A beautiful, resonant story
Derived From Web , Dec 23, 2019
While I'm sure that this book will resonate particularly with those who know someone with dementia, it will probably resonate with many other readers as well. At its heart, it is a beautiful, moving story for all to enjoy. The illustrations also complement the story perfectly.

Beautiful book that touches the heart
Derived From Web , Jul 18, 2019
When a book like this touches your heart, it feels impossible to form words worthy of review it. I read it every time I cry. It touched me so much that I had to own a copy, though no one currently has Alzheimer's disease or dementia in my family. Even before learning that the author's grandfather has Alzheimer, I could feel that this came from a deep and personal place. The idea of using balloons as a metaphor to explain what happens to the memories of these loved ones affected by this disease is comforting, but does not sugarcoat the experience. It is realistic, yet done with such love and care. The use of important color draws your eye into each balloon and the spare memories that each holds. This book deserves all the stars possible, but even that seems insufficient praise and thanks for a beautiful book that touches the heart of so many.

Beautiful story, beautiful illustrations.
Derived From Web , Jun 2, 2019
A friend shared on her Instagram story about it and I had to check it out. Wow, what a difference! We cried and talked about our grandparents and our great grandparents and how special and important they are. It was a sweet story and carried a wonderful message to my children about the elderly, as so many do not. It was also nice that the characters were of color. We’re a mixed race family and I love when my children can look through our books and see different colors represented. I didn 't have that growing up!

LOVE this book
Derived From Web , May 5, 2019
I love this book absolutely ''. Watching my grandma die several years ago with Alzheimer's and now watching my father struggle in the beginning stages, our family has definitely been affected by the disease. This book is loved by my parents, my children and myself.

This touching book is so adorable! I love the balloon visualization as a way to explain something both abstract and sensitive. I can 't wait to see what this new author has to share.
