Kindle Version Has Apparently Improved
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
There are endnote links and it is easy to flit between the main text and the notes. One small deficit of the Kindle version in relation to the paper is that the interlocutors are not listed at the top of the page in my view. That can be helpful for a reader who wants to make sure who Socrates is talking to when the names are only occasionally listed in the text. I would also like to see the original section notation, like in the print version.

Kindle edition sadface no Stephanus numbers
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
I bought the kindle edition so that I could search for specific words quickly, but the lack of Stephanus numbers in the margins makes cross-referencing a real pain. Obviously, this translation of the Republic is amazing. I'm only giving 2-stars for the kindle formatting.

Joe Sachs on Bloom's Republic: "by far the most accurate available"
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
The author of the 2007 Plato's Republic translation and a translator of numerous books by Plato and Aristotle says : Whatever new translation I have read from time to time, I have always returned to that of Allan Bloom, as by far the most accurate.

Plato is fun!!!!
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
We all know that there is no point in reviewing such a classic. What I want to say is that Plato is so much fun to read. When I found out, that was how Plato wrote, I became interested. It is passed on!

Some printing errors; good footnotes.
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
The text is accessible and it is easy to read, but the printing is sometimes wonky. Bloom's footnotes are great, but his essay is really not.

Great book, but the Kindle version is horrible
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
I have the 2nd issue in both the book and the Kindle form. I give the book 5 stars. The Kindle version is terrible. You will not see this from the sample, but the index is simply useless - a list of words with no hyperlinks. Additionally, none of the citations are present in the Kindle version, rendering it worthless for serious study or using outlines. One wonders whether anyone at the publisher, Basic Books, has bothered to read the Kindle version before releasing it. The book itself gets 5 stars, the Kindle version needs a lot of work before it is worth the money.

Platos Pal
Derived From Web , May 11, 2022
I bought this as a textbook in college and used it so much that I missed it again and gave it to a friend of mine. Allan Bloom was a professor who taught my professor about the actual Greek version. I reread portions to rethink different aspects of philosophy. It always brings me back to my college days as well. It is amazing to see how thoughts and opinions change over time. I know that this isn 't a very good review, but if you like philosophy, this is a no-brainer.

The Rhetoric
Derived From Web , Apr 25, 2022
Most people know this book by its title alone, not by content. It's a book I must admit I'm not for the faint of heart. This volume contains all the necessary corrections and additions to the original, all 450 pages of it. It is not so much the result of all thinking, but the process of thinking itself which makes this a great book, Raymond said. Known as one of the great Greek philosiphers of all-time, you can get a taste of his way of thinking and the time he was living in. If you have any interest in history and philosophy this book is for you.
