Book Overview

David Kherdian re-creates his mother's voice in telling the true story of a childhood interrupted by one of the most devastating holocausts of our century. Vernon Dumehjian Kherdian was born into a loving and prosperous family. Then, in the year 1915, the Turkish government began the systematic destruction of its Armenian population.

   One of the best
One of the best first- hand accounts about the Genocide that I' ve read is this one. A book about it was written for younger people. This will be on my list of required reading once I start teaching. I wasn't sure I'd get through it. I couldn't put it down after page 20. It was touching. I wanted Veron to be okay so that he could understand what was going on. For her to survive. This was one of the two books that brought tears to my eyes. I' ve read a lot of books about the Armenia and the Genocide. This is one of the best. It is easy to understand. This book will help if you are struggling to tell your teen about it. I think it's a good idea. Kherdian should be praised for his bravery in writing this book.

   I highly recommend it.
I highly recommend this book, it's a part of history that I don't think many Americans have read about. The Turks will not admit their part in the slaughter. The Christians were the Armenians.

   Moving
I liked it a lot. I gave it to my 15 year old granddaughter after I finished it. I believe that most people don't know about the atrocities that the Armenian people suffered in those days and how their historic lands were taken from them.

My favorite book since age 12!
This was the first true story book I ever read. I was thrilled to find a collectible copy of this book available for purchase. It made a lasting impression on me, obviously. I recall being made to read The Diary of Anne Frank in school. I would like to see this book added to a required reading list for students as it shows war through the eyes of a young girl as no book I have ever read has done. It makes a lasting impression on both children and adults. I hope that sharing my copy with my children will cause them to be more aware of what is happening in the world around them. I recommend this book to everyone.

   Very touching book
This was a sad book that needed to be read in our house. It was the inspiration for the Holocaust, so it should be required in a world history class.

A must read… Get to know the history of the Armenian Genocide
It changed my life when I read this for the first time 34 years ago. If I could, I would buy a copy and give it away a week from now. From the eyes of a little girl, learn the history of the Genocide.

   Story about Armenian Genocide Witness.
A story about an armenian girl who lost the best days of her childhood in the shallows of a terrible event. This breaks my heart because I am an Armenian. This is just a single story of a soul, but it shows the history of the people. I will give this book to my kids when they grow up.

We don't know enough about the genocide. I haven't read it yet, but my granddaughter found it to be an excellent book. Like the books about life during WW II and the holocaust, this is a real eye- opener and should be read more.
